ILTM LATAM - LogoIn an era dominated by digital platforms and instant bookings, one might assume that luxury travel agents are becoming obsolete. Yet, the reality is quite the opposite. As high-net-worth travellers seek more personalized and seamless experiences, the role of travel agents in the luxury tourism sector has never been more crucial. Their expertise, connections, and ability to curate unique experiences continue to drive the industry forward.

The upcoming ILTM Latin America, set to take place in São Paulo from May 5 to 8, is a testament to this trend. This prestigious event brings together the leading names in luxury tourism, offering a stage for discussions on emerging trends, innovations, and the indispensable role of travel consultants.

According to the ILTM & PANROTAS 2024/25 Luxury Travel in Latin America Yearbook, despite the availability of vast online resources, affluent travellers still rely on expert advisors for security, exclusive access, and tailored itineraries. Virtuoso’s latest report reflects this reliance, which shows a 25% increase in luxury travel sales in 2024 compared to the previous year.

Luxury Travel Agents: The Architects of Exclusive Experiences

Luxury travel isn’t just about booking a five-star hotel—it’s about crafting an experience that is seamless, immersive, and extraordinary. Travel agents specializing in high-end tourism play a pivotal role in ensuring that discerning travellers receive tailor-made journeys that cater to their tastes and desires.

Simon Mayle, Director of ILTM Latin America, underscores the value of expert guidance, stating:

“ILTM’s mission is to connect travel agents with the world’s most prestigious hotels, destinations, and industry leaders. The consistent growth of this sector is clear proof that these professionals are essential in shaping luxury travel trends.”

In response to the growing demand for expertise, ILTM has introduced a dedicated course for luxury tourism agents, ensuring they stay ahead of market trends and continue to deliver exceptional experiences. “The role of an agent goes far beyond making reservations. They act as advisors, problem solvers, and curators of one-of-a-kind travel experiences,” Mayle adds.

The Luxury Travel Boom: Spending Trends and Preferences

The ILTM & PANROTAS Yearbook reveals that 26% of high-net-worth travellers consult a travel agency from the beginning of their planning. In comparison, another 24% seek expert advice after conducting their research. However, the most significant shift in the market is the growing willingness to invest significantly in exclusive travel experiences.

Luxury travellers are now spending up to R$50,000 per person on trips lasting up to 15 days, marking a significant increase from previous years. This trend highlights a shift toward more authentic and meaningful experiences, with travellers seeking destinations offering exclusivity, cultural richness, and bespoke itineraries.

Simon Mayle elaborates:

“Luxury travelers today are better informed and arrive with curated wish lists. Our role is to refine their ideas and turn them into flawless, unforgettable journeys. The higher the investment, the more value they place on expert guidance.”

This heightened demand is fueled by multiple factors, including the appreciation of foreign currencies against the Brazilian real, a rising number of affluent travellers, and a desire for ultra-personalized experiences.
