In a landmark move set to reshape the global travel industry, Swiss retail giant Migros has confirmed the sale of its prestigious Hotelplan Group. The new ownership structure will see Germany-based DERTOUR Group acquire Hotelplan’s travel agency and tour operations in Switzerland, Germany, and the UK, while vacation rental specialist Interhome will transition to HomeToGo Group. This strategic divestment promises to enhance growth, innovation, and seamless customer service across all brands, ensuring a strong future for both businesses.
A Strategic Shift in Ownership
After decades of ownership, Migros has opted to pass the reins of the Hotelplan Group to two established tourism powerhouses, guaranteeing stability and continued excellence in service. The move is poised to bolster Hotelplan’s growth in the evolving travel landscape.
“The DERTOUR Group and HomeToGo Group provide us with a strong future for the entire Hotelplan Group,” said Michel Gruber, Chairman of Hotelplan Group’s Board of Directors and Head of the Retail Department at the Federation of Migros Cooperatives. “While parting with Hotelplan is difficult, we are confident that its new owners will build on its legacy and drive further success.”
The completion of the acquisition is pending regulatory approvals, but industry analysts predict a smooth transition given the strong alignment between the companies involved.
DERTOUR Group Expands European Travel Dominance
One of Europe’s premier travel conglomerates, DERTOUR Group, has a long-standing reputation for excellence in the travel and hospitality industry. The acquisition of Hotelplan’s travel businesses aligns with DERTOUR’s strategy of reinforcing its footprint in the European travel market.
“We are excited to integrate Hotelplan Group into our extensive tourism network,” said Ingo Burmester, CEO of DERTOUR Group Central Europe and a member of its executive board. “Hotelplan’s well-established brands will benefit from our expertise and global partnerships. Our shared values, including exceptional customer experiences, personalized service, and sustainability, make this acquisition a perfect fit.”
By integrating Hotelplan’s resources and its strategic investments in digital innovation, DERTOUR aims to provide an expanded and enriched selection of holiday packages, catering to an even broader audience.
HomeToGo Strengthens Its Position in the Vacation Rental Market
HomeToGo, a publicly listed company in Germany, has acquired Interhome, a well-known vacation rental service with over 60 years of history. This move strengthens HomeToGo’s growing B2B portfolio, particularly within its HomeToGo_PRO segment.
“We are thrilled to welcome Interhome into the HomeToGo Group,” said Dr. Patrick Andrae, CEO and co-founder of HomeToGo. “Interhome’s expertise in holiday home rentals and management, combined with our cutting-edge technology and marketplace solutions, will create new opportunities for both property owners and travelers.”
Interhome will retain its identity as a premium Swiss brand while benefiting from HomeToGo’s advanced software solutions, making bookings more streamlined and enhancing the customer experience. Notably, Interhome will continue to operate its local service offices, ensuring personalized support remains a key aspect of its offering.
A Smooth Transition for Customers and Employees
One of the most reassuring aspects of this acquisition is that customers, property owners, and sales partners will experience no disruption. All existing bookings will be honoured, and services will continue as usual. Both Hotelplan and Interhome’s dedicated teams will remain in place, ensuring seamless continuity for travellers.
“The transition will have no impact on booked holidays or upcoming business trips. Customers can expect the same high standards of service they have always enjoyed,” confirmed a spokesperson for Hotelplan Group.
Employees of the Hotelplan Group will transfer to their respective new owners, with both DERTOUR and HomeToGo expressing commitment to maintaining and growing their teams. This is a significant move, as it ensures job security and continuity for industry professionals.
A Bold Future for European Travel
The acquisition marks a significant milestone in the travel and tourism sector. DERTOUR’s robust global partnerships and market expertise, combined with HomeToGo’s technological edge, position both companies for remarkable growth. The travel industry is undergoing rapid transformation, and this strategic deal underscores a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and customer-focused excellence.
As regulatory approvals are awaited, industry watchers anticipate a successful transition, with Hotelplan Group set to thrive under its new leadership. This acquisition signals a new era of opportunity and growth in European travel for travellers, business partners, and industry professionals.
