The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) has set the stage for a remarkable year in tourism, launching two high-energy, exhibition-style events in Perth and Sydney. These vibrant gatherings at The Westin Perth and Doltone House Hyde Park captivated over 200 travel professionals, underscoring Japan’s soaring popularity among Australian travellers.
With a robust lineup of 40 premier Japanese suppliers at each event, JNTO created a platform for meaningful networking and knowledge-sharing. Travel agents and trade partners had the chance to deepen their understanding of Japan’s diverse offerings, from its bustling metropolises to its serene regional landscapes.
Adding excitement to the proceedings was Myaku-Myaku, the official mascot of Expo 2025 Osaka. The playful character brought the upcoming World Expo’s vibrant spirit to life, highlighting its anticipated run from April 13 to October 13, 2025. This global event is poised to elevate Japan’s status as a must-visit destination.
Record-Breaking Growth in Australian Tourism to Japan
The events also served as a platform for JNTO to reveal staggering growth figures. In 2024, Australian travellers visiting Japan surged 48% compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019. Harriett Bougher, JNTO’s Business Development & Senior Assistant Marketing Manager, expressed gratitude to attendees, acknowledging their role in promoting tourism beyond Japan’s traditional hotspots.
“The dispersal of tourists across Japan’s regional areas has been phenomenal,” Bougher noted. “We’re seeing an unprecedented interest in destinations that offer authentic cultural experiences and natural beauty.”

A Celebration of Japanese Culture
Beyond networking and data-sharing, attendees were treated to an immersive cultural experience. A traditional koto player provided an elegant soundtrack to the evening, enhancing the ambience and fostering a deeper appreciation for Japan’s rich heritage. The events also featured enticing prize giveaways, from luxury accommodation stays to traditional crafts and premium Japanese spirits.
The event’s success was a testament to the meticulous planning and execution by Linkd Tourism, JNTO’s event partner. Their efforts facilitated valuable connections and ignited a renewed enthusiasm for Japan’s tourism prospects among Australian travel professionals.
As Japan prepares for the global spotlight with Expo 2025, these events significantly strengthen the travel industry’s ties between Japan and Australia. The future of Japanese tourism looks brighter than ever, promising unforgettable experiences for travelers and robust opportunities for the travel trade.
