UN Tourism - logoThe global tourism industry has surged to life in 2024, reaching an extraordinary milestone by recovering to pre-pandemic levels. With an estimated 1.4 billion international tourist arrivals, this remarkable achievement underscores the resilience and adaptability of the sector after the most significant crisis in its history.

According to the World Tourism Barometer by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the sector’s rebound has been fueled by strong demand, the revitalization of large source markets, and the continued recovery of destinations across Asia and the Pacific. Compared to 2023, the 11% growth in arrivals represents 140 million travellers.

Regional Highlights: Global Tourism Reclaims Its Glory

In 2024, several regions demonstrated stellar growth, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and setting new benchmarks for success:

  • Middle East: With 95 million arrivals, the Middle East recorded an impressive 32% growth over 2019 levels, cementing its position as the fastest-growing region globally. Compared to 2023, arrivals grew by 1%, underscoring consistent progress.
  • Africa: The continent welcomed 74 million international tourists, achieving a 7% growth over 2019 and a 12% increase compared to 2023. Notable growth was seen in North Africa, which surged 22% beyond pre-pandemic figures.
  • Europe: As the world’s largest destination region, Europe hosted 747 million international visitors, exceeding 2019 numbers by 1%. Intraregional demand fueled this growth, with Southern Mediterranean Europe leading the charge at +8% compared to 2019.
  • Americas: The Americas saw 213 million arrivals, recovering 97% of pre-pandemic levels. The Caribbean and Central America outperformed 2019 figures, contributing to the region’s 7% growth compared to 2023.
  • Asia and the Pacific: Despite lagging at 87% of pre-pandemic levels, the region experienced rapid recovery, with international arrivals growing by 33% in 2024. This represents a significant leap from a 66% recovery at the end of 2023.

Driving Socio-Economic Growth with a Sustainable Vision

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili hailed 2024 as a pivotal year for tourism, stating, “Global tourism has not only completed its recovery but is now surpassing pre-pandemic benchmarks in many areas. The sector must leverage this momentum to accelerate transformation, ensuring people and the planet remain at the heart of tourism development.”

This renewed growth highlights the critical role of tourism in socio-economic development, with mature and emerging destinations reaping the benefits of increased visitor spending. Export earnings from international tourism hit a record $1.9 trillion in 2024, reflecting a 3% increase over 2019 in real terms.

Top Performing Destinations: A New Era of Tourism

Many destinations surpassed expectations, reporting double-digit growth compared to pre-pandemic levels. Standout performers include:

  • El Salvador: +81% over 2019 figures
  • Saudi Arabia: +69%
  • Ethiopia: +40%
  • Morocco: +35%
  • Guatemala: +33%
  • Dominican Republic: +32%

Additionally, Qatar recorded a staggering +137% growth, while Albania and Colombia grew by 80% and 37%, respectively, demonstrating the increasing appeal of diverse, lesser-explored destinations.

Economic Indicators: Record-Breaking Revenues

The financial impact of tourism’s recovery is undeniable. International tourism receipts reached $1.6 trillion in 2024, up 4% from 2019 in real terms. Average spending per tourist has gradually stabilized, with the global average reaching $1,100 per arrival in 2024, compared to $1,000 before the pandemic.

Key contributors to revenue growth include:

  • El Salvador: +206%
  • Saudi Arabia: +148%
  • United Kingdom: +40%
  • Spain: +36%
  • France: +27%

Outlook for 2025: Sustained Growth Amid Challenges

The future of global tourism appears promising, with international arrivals projected to grow by 3% to 5% in 2025. This outlook assumes favourable economic conditions, declining inflation, and minimal geopolitical escalation.

However, challenges persist. Rising transport and accommodation costs, volatile oil prices, and extreme weather events remain significant risks. The UNWTO’s Confidence Index revealed that 64% of experts anticipate better performance in 2025, while 26% expect stable outcomes. Only 9% foresee a downturn.

As growth stabilizes, the focus shifts to balancing expansion with sustainability. Travellers are increasingly seeking eco-conscious experiences and undiscovered destinations, paving the way for transformative trends in global tourism.

Sustainability and Innovation: Shaping the Future

The global recovery has spotlighted the importance of sustainable practices and technological innovation in the tourism industry. From the rise of fractional ownership models to advancements in eco-friendly travel solutions, the sector is evolving to meet the demands of environmentally conscious travellers.

Emerging trends include:

  • Adoption of sustainable tourism practices by destinations worldwide
  • Investments in renewable energy and green infrastructure
  • Enhanced use of artificial intelligence to improve traveller experiences

Conclusion: A Triumph of Resilience and Renewal

The recovery of international tourism in 2024 is a testament to the industry’s resilience, innovation, and enduring appeal. As we move into 2025, we focus on harnessing this momentum to foster sustainable growth and create meaningful experiences for travellers worldwide. With a commitment to people and the planet, the future of tourism promises to be brighter than ever.
