Lufthansa Group - LogoIn a monumental development for European aviation, Lufthansa Group has officially acquired a 41% stake in ITA Airways, solidifying its position as Europe’s leading airline conglomerate. The deal, finalized with a €325 million capital injection, represents a significant milestone in Lufthansa’s strategy to expand its presence in key markets. ITA Airways, the Italian flagship carrier, now joins Lufthansa’s prestigious roster of network airlines, including Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines.

A Pivotal Expansion

The Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) and Lufthansa concluded the transaction following approval from the European Commission and other global competition authorities. While MEF retains a 59% stake in ITA Airways, Lufthansa has secured options to acquire the remaining shares.

Carsten Spohr, CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership:

“We are proud to finally welcome ITA Airways to the Lufthansa Group. The ITA Airways team has written an impressive success story, and with great energy, passion, and expertise, has built an airline that is already the pride of an entire nation. With this investment, we aim to strengthen both the Italian and European aviation markets.”

Italy: Lufthansa’s New “Home Market”

With this acquisition, Italy becomes a cornerstone of Lufthansa’s European strategy. Italy’s significance is undeniable as the company’s second-largest international market after the United States. Rome Fiumicino Airport, a five-star hub recognized by Skytrax, now serves as Lufthansa’s sixth central hub, further expanding its southern European footprint. Milan Linate, a critical metropolitan airport, is also poised to play a prominent role in the Group’s operations.

Integration and Customer Benefits

ITA Airways will retain its brand identity while benefiting from Lufthansa’s extensive network and resources. The integration process will roll out in phases, ensuring seamless customer transitions. Key milestones include:

  • Frequent Flyer Integration: ITA’s “Volare” loyalty program will align with Lufthansa’s “Miles & More” program, offering customers greater flexibility in earning and redeeming points.
  • Codeshare Agreements: Passengers will enjoy enhanced connectivity through joint flight codes.
  • Lounge Access: Mutual access to premium lounges across both airline networks.
  • Star Alliance Membership: ITA Airways is expected to join Star Alliance, amplifying its global reach.

These initiatives aim to deliver improved travel experiences, with optimized connections and services available as early as the summer flight schedule.

A Young Airline with Ambition

Founded in 2021, ITA Airways has quickly established itself as a modern, eco-conscious carrier. Operating a fleet of 99 Airbus aircraft, including state-of-the-art A350-900 and A330-900neo models, ITA serves nearly 70 destinations worldwide. In 2024 alone, the airline welcomed 18 million passengers, showcasing its rapid growth and popularity.

Leadership Appointments

As part of the integration, Lufthansa has appointed seasoned executives to lead ITA Airways:

  • Joerg Eberhart assumes the role of CEO, succeeding Antonino Turicchi and Andrea Benassi. Eberhart brings extensive experience from within the Lufthansa Group.
  • Lorenza Maggio takes on the position of Chief Strategy and Integration Officer, overseeing ITA’s strategic development and integration.
  • Michael Trestl, formerly Austrian Airlines’ Chief Commercial Officer, will serve as ITA’s Implementation Officer, ensuring a smooth transition into Lufthansa’s ecosystem.

Carsten Spohr remarked:

“With Joerg Eberhart, Lorenza Maggio, and Michael Trestl, we have assembled a leadership team with unparalleled expertise to drive ITA’s success and integration into the Lufthansa Group.”

Environmental Commitments

Aligned with Lufthansa’s sustainability objectives, ITA Airways’ modern fleet underscores its commitment to reducing carbon emissions. The airline’s focus on operational efficiency complements Lufthansa’s broader environmental goals, reinforcing their shared vision for a greener future in aviation.

A New Chapter in European Aviation

Lufthansa’s acquisition of ITA Airways represents more than just a business transaction—it is a strategic alliance poised to reshape Europe’s aviation landscape. As ITA integrates into Lufthansa’s network, customers can anticipate unparalleled service, expanded destinations, and a stronger connection between Italy and the world.

With its sights set on further growth, Lufthansa Group’s latest move solidifies its status as a dominant force in global aviation, promising a new era of excellence and innovation for travellers worldwide.
