Spread the love

Cleveland Museum of Natural History - LogoThe Cleveland Museum of Natural History (CMNH) has ushered in a new era of discovery. Its extraordinary $150 million transformation redefines how visitors experience the story of life on Earth. This ambitious project, blending cutting-edge architecture with groundbreaking exhibit design, sets a bold new benchmark for museums worldwide.

This weekend marks the grand opening of CMNH’s completely reimagined campus. With more than 375,000 square feet of renovated and expanded space, over two acres of outdoor areas, and immersive exhibits that place visitors at the centre of the narrative, the museum invites everyone to reconnect with the wonders of science and nature.

A Visionary Leap Forward

“Every aspect of our transformed museum aims to achieve one unified vision: to promote healthy humans, a healthy planet, and a better future for all,” said Sonia Winner, President & CEO of CMNH. “By placing visitors at the center of the story of our planet, we’re inspiring all to foster a deeper understanding of science and a connection to nature.”

The transformation departs from traditional, static displays. Instead, CMNH offers a cohesive, inquiry-based narrative that weaves together the interconnectedness of life and the natural world. This innovative approach, spearheaded by the renowned experience design firm Gallagher & Associates (G&A), prioritizes relevance and engagement.

Architectural Excellence Inspired by Nature

Designed by DLR Group, the museum’s stunning architecture draws inspiration from Northeast Ohio’s geological history. Flowing white forms echo the glaciers that shaped the Great Lakes region, seamlessly integrating science and design. The structure’s energy-efficient innovations have earned it LEED Platinum certification, making it a national model of sustainability.

Key sustainable features include:

  • A 32% reduction in energy consumption.
  • Use of bird-friendly glass and minimized light pollution.
  • Rainwater-capture systems and native vegetation to support biodiversity.
