ATIA - logoAustralia’s appetite for international travel soared in 2024, with Japan, Vietnam, and Indonesia emerging as the fastest-growing destinations.

The Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA) has unveiled its December Travel Trends report, shedding light on this remarkable surge. Using comprehensive data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and the Department of Infrastructure, ATIA reveals a 12.1% year-on-year increase in Australian international departures for October 2024, totalling an impressive 1.66 million.

Japan Leads with Record-Breaking Growth

Among the standout performers, Japan recorded a staggering 73.8% year-on-year growth. This dramatic rise saw 567,330 Australians travel to Japan by October’s end, as the country’s unique blend of culture, cuisine, and seasonal attractions continues to captivate travellers.

ATIA’s Director of Membership and Industry Affairs, Richard Taylor, emphasized, “Destinations like Japan, Vietnam, and Indonesia are seeing unprecedented growth. Japan’s 73.8% year-on-year surge is phenomenal, reflecting Australian travellers’ evolving preferences.”

Vietnam and Indonesia Close Behind

Vietnam and Indonesia also saw significant boosts, with 35.4% and 26% yearly increases, respectively. Vietnam attracted 423,630 Australians, showcasing its appeal with lush landscapes, vibrant cities, and authentic experiences. Meanwhile, Indonesia remains a perennial favourite, welcoming a staggering 1.64 million Australian travellers and securing its position as the top destination for total visitors.

Taylor noted, “Leisure travel is driving this surge, with 63.6% of Australians traveling for holidays. The strong focus on reconnecting with friends and family also highlights the personal value of travel.”

New Zealand and the USA Hold Steady

While Japan, Vietnam, and Indonesia dominate growth metrics, New Zealand and the United States remain among the most popular destinations. New Zealand saw 1.34 million Australian visitors, an 8.2% increase, while the USA attracted 732,490, up 13% from the previous year.

Australia’s Inbound Travel Renaissance

Strong inbound travel growth mirrors the outbound boom. China leads the charge with a phenomenal 96.6% increase in visitors to Australia, while South Korea and Japan demonstrate robust growth of nearly 50%.

“These figures underline the enduring appeal of Australia as a destination,” said Taylor.

Leisure Travel Driving the Surge

The report highlights leisure as the primary driver of outbound travel, accounting for 63.6% of trips. Visits to friends and relatives contributed 24%, while business travel made up 5%.

Taylor urged travellers to plan wisely: “When deciding on your travel plans, whether it’s for holidaying or business, choose an ATIA-accredited business to ensure your travel plans deliver.”
