In a bold move reflecting its aspirations to become a world-class airline, Air India, under the stewardship of Tata Group, has announced a monumental order of 100 Airbus aircraft. The new order includes ten state-of-the-art A350 widebody jets and 90 A320 Family single-aisle aircraft, solidifying its position as a major player in global aviation. Alongside the aircraft purchase, Air India has secured Airbus’ Flight Hour Services-Component (FHS-C), a cutting-edge maintenance solution to optimise fleet reliability and operational efficiency.

This announcement follows Air India’s unprecedented 2023 order of 250 Airbus planes, including 40 A350 and 210 A320 Family aircraft. With this latest addition, the airline’s total Airbus orderbook now stands at an impressive 344 aircraft, of which six A350-900s have already been delivered. The expansion is part of Air India’s ambitious fleet modernization program under its transformative “Vihaan.AI” initiative.

Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, highlighted the airline’s vision:

The Airbus A350, which has been operating in Air India’s fleet since January 2024, symbolizes the airline’s foray into ultra-long-haul markets. Known for its advanced aerodynamics, lightweight materials, and fuel-efficient engines, the A350 delivers a 25% reduction in fuel burn and CO₂ emissions, making it the world’s most efficient widebody aircraft in its category. The A321neo, part of the A320 Family, offers similar advancements, including 20% fuel savings and reduced noise, while maximizing passenger comfort with the most expansive single-aisle cabin.

Adopting Airbus’ Flight Hour Services-Component (FHS-C) reflects Air India’s commitment to operational excellence. This comprehensive service package includes fully integrated component solutions, on-site stock at Delhi, access to Airbus’ mutualized regional spare pools, and advanced repair and engineering services. With guaranteed service levels, FHS-C ensures maximized aircraft availability and significant maintenance cost savings.
