Global Rescue - logoAs the winter holiday season approaches, millions of travellers worldwide are gearing up for festive journeys. However, many are unaware of a simple packing mistake that could derail their holiday plans. According to the Fall 2024 Global Rescue Traveler Sentiment and Safety Survey, one in ten holidaymakers will pack wrapped gifts in their carry-on luggage—a decision that could lead to unexpected delays at airport security checkpoints.

Although the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) does not prohibit wrapped presents in carry-on baggage, it strongly advises against it. “It’s tempting to wrap presents ahead of time and neatly pack them in your carry-on, but doing so could lead to frustrations at security,” warns Harding Bush, a former Navy SEAL and current Associate Director of Security at Global Rescue.

The Wrapping Dilemma at Security Checkpoints

Airport security personnel, including TSA agents, must inspect items to ensure passenger safety. Wrapped gifts can obstruct this process, requiring agents to open packages to verify their contents. The result? Travellers face delays, ruined wrapping, and unnecessary stress.

“The most practical solution is to pack unwrapped gifts in your carry-on luggage,” suggests Bush. “Bring wrapping paper or gift bags separately and wrap items once you arrive at your destination. Alternatively, if wrapping in advance is a must, place gifts in your checked luggage.”

Why Security is Critical During Holiday Travel

Peak travel seasons bring heightened security measures, making it crucial for passengers to minimize unnecessary complications. “Security is always a top concern during busy travel, ” Bush adds. “Keeping gifts unwrapped not only streamlines the process for travelers but also aids airport staff in maintaining efficiency.”

Travel Tips for a Smooth Holiday Journey

To ensure your holiday travel is as stress-free as possible, consider these expert recommendations:

  1. Pack Wisely: Place wrapped gifts in checked luggage to avoid scrutiny.
  2. Stay Flexible: Opt for gift bags or collapsible wrapping options.
  3. Plan Ahead: Allow extra time at security checkpoints during peak holiday periods.
  4. Ship Gifts: If possible, send presents ahead to your destination to bypass security altogether.
