Sri Lanka’s unique geography provides year-round surfing opportunities. The island experiences two monsoon seasons, which divide the surfable coastline into two central regions. The southwest coast comes alive with ideal conditions from November to April, while the east coast offers the best waves from May to October. The best time to visit depends on which coast one wishes to explore:

· Southwest Coast (Hikkaduwa, Dewata, Ahangama, Weligama): End of October to early April.

· East Coast (Arugam Bay, Whiskey Point): May to October.

· Shoulder Season: While the island’s south-western monsoon gets into the entire swing season from May to October, the Dewata and Weligama beaches in the south allow some surfing in the south in July and August and are safe for beginner surfing owing to their sand bottom breaks. The surf lesson begins with half an hour of theory and demonstration of the basic moves and techniques. This is followed by a 1-hour practical lesson in the sea with the instructor to help get everyone up on the waves. Lessons are suitable for children, beginners or advanced surfers, and the session can be customised according to one’s skill level. Dewata’s sand bottom break is one of the safest breaks in Sri Lanka, even for children as young as 3 years. The remaining half an hour is spent surfing at leisure, with supervision at all times from the instructor.
