Reopening on 6 December 2024 for the winter season, Hotel La Perla in the Dolomites is a family-run, five-star retreat located in the picturesque village of Corvara in South Tyrol, Italy. Nestled within the stunning Alta Badia region in the heart of the Dolomites, this Leading Hotels of the World property offers breathtaking views of the Dolomite Mountains and direct access to outstanding skiing and hiking trails; its slopeside location offering ski-in, ski-out. Known for its warm hospitality, La Perla combines rustic alpine charm with elegant, cosy interiors, featuring wood-panelled rooms and traditional décor. The hotel offers gourmet dining, a luxurious spa, and a commitment to sustainability.
The story of Hotel La Perla began when Ernesto Costa, a ski instructor and plumber born in 1931, built a six-room house. Two generations of the Costa family have now run the hotel and they celebrate the Ladin tradition to the full. The three sons of Annie and Ernesto Costa, Michil, Mathias and Maximilian are all committed to maintaining this hospitality.
New Suites
The fourth floor of La Perla is now home to three brand new one- and two-bedroom suites. This follows a complete redesign and merging of rooms in July 2023 by Milan architect Alessia Galimberti in partnership with in-house Design Director Stefan Mayr, a 30-year veteran with the Costa family, dedicated to preserving the property’s iconic Ladin style. Together, they infused the suites with a Ladinité aesthetic, emphasising natural harmony, craftsmanship, and heritage. Locally sourced materials, handwoven textiles, and traditional wood panelling highlight the Ladin culture’s artisanal roots. Custom furniture, from hand-carved headboards to heirloom stoves and tables, enriches the atmosphere with timeless sophistication.
The 51 rooms at Hotel La Perla are havens of peace and tranquillity. All boast views of the Dolomites and are bathed in plenty of natural light, whilst many have views to the Sassongher Mountain. A number of the pieces of furniture are unique pieces belonging to the Costa family: from a beer mug collection, pottery teacups, headboards, through to a typewriter collection, paintings, clocks, vases and sculptures.
A Brand-New Spa
The all-new Hotel La Perla spa, Salus Per Aquam, has been totally rebuilt for the winter 2024 season and embodies Hotel La Perla’s dedication to well-being, blending artisanal heritage with modern wellness and elegant simplicity, offering a truly distinct and memorable experience. The spa offers a wide range of regenerating treatments including saunas, Turkish baths, Kneipp, hydro massage, and an indoor pool. The Alpine Pine Massage, which utilises pine branches and fossilised pine for a relaxing muscular massage, is the perfect post-mountain relaxation treatment; the aroma of pine wood has beneficial properties which improve the airways and the immune system.
The new spa design is deeply connected to the Dolomites’ natural beauty. The spa features alpine pine, larch wood, and locally crafted details like hand-sculpted door handles and bronze-tinted glass. This sanctuary, crafted by Studio Bizzarro & Partners, Castlunger Homes, and Design Director Stefan Mayr, blends rustic warmth with sophisticated touches, embodying La Perla’s sustainable ethos. The Costa family’s meticulous vision has created a tranquil space that reflects Ladin heritage and modern wellness.
Drinking and dining
The jewel in Hotel La Perla’s crown, La Stüa de Michil, is a Michelin star gourmet chamber combining tradition and innovation. Soft lights, fine centrepieces prepared daily by Mrs Costa, candles and local wood panelling create an inimitable ambience.
Chef Simone Cantafio’s cuisine is all about creativity and exceptional prime materials and Cantafio is also responsible for overseeing the hotel’s other dining outlets; style and comfort are the distinctive features of Les Stües, the house restaurant where Ladin tradition and decor add to the dining experience, the atmospheric Bistrot offers a genuine Italian dining experience with the best ingredients from the Mediterranean kitchen to South Tyrol and Restaurant Ladinia is an alpine restaurant located in Corvara’s very first inn, with stunning views of Mount Sassongher. The menu focuses on Alpine produce, with local traditions taking pride of place. This winter season, guests will be able to continue to book Chef Simone Cantafio’s exclusive INCÖ table in the private Weinstube. The Tree House can also accommodate two guests for champagne and gourmet finger food.
Mahatma Wine is the hotel’s much loved wine cellar, home to thirty thousand bottles and three thousand labels of European origin. For those who can’t miss out on Après Ski, L’Murin is the meeting place of the area – celebrating its 25th anniversary this year – with music, a veranda and outdoor seating. In summer it transforms into a brewery with a large selection of artisan beers from all over Europe.
