In this edition of Spotlight, we’ll learn more about Curio Collection by Hilton by peeking inside The Candler Hotel Atlanta. The hotel is a great example of what makes this Hilton brand so special, as many Curio Collection properties are built inside one-of-a-kind, historic buildings in the world’s most sought-after destinations.
The Candler Hotel Atlanta, Curio Collection by Hilton in Atlanta was built by Coca-Cola magnate Asa Griggs Candler in 1906. The 17-story high-rise was Atlanta’s first steel skyscraper and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A stunning example of Beaux-Arts architecture, the bank vault in the building’s basement is rumored to have been the former secured location of the sought-after Coca-Cola formula.
Today, the hotel boasts many original features, including original Tiffany glass windows, the marble lobby, mosaic flooring, and original rugs. Its restaurant, By George, is helmed by Celebrity Chef Hugh Acheson (a two-time James Beard Foundation Award winner) and serves up Southern cuisine.
“I love the fact that they [Hilton] take these old resort properties, old buildings that have a story and turn them into hotels,” said Jerome Smith, guest services supervisor & ambassador, The Candler Hotel Atlanta, Curio Collection by Hilton. “So once you come in here, you’re just finding secrets of the building and what’s the story about the building. I’m honored that I’ve been able to tell the story here. It’s a treasure.”
In addition to The Candler, Curio Collection offers a global portfolio of 175 individually remarkable hotels with distinct stories and one-of-a-kind experiences, including:
Hotel del Coronado, Curio Collection by Hilton, which first opened its doors in 1888 to host celebrities, royalty, and beach-going families—and also served as a popular backdrop for some of Hollywood’s biggest movies.
St. Louis Union Station Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton, which occupies what was once the biggest and busiest rail terminal in the nation.
And once the iconic London Guarantee & Accident headquarters, LondonHouse Chicago, Curio Collection by Hilton is located in a 1923 building renowned as one of the “Big Four” skyscrapers around the former Michigan Avenue Bridge.
