Winter in Scotland is a special time: cities and attractions are dressed in lights brightening up the long dark nights with an array of markets, light shows and tasty treats to fill the evening air with warmth and festive cheer. On 30th November, St Andrew’s Day kickstarts the season’s festivities with events and activities commemorating Scotland’s patron saint. At the end of December, Hogmanay celebrations across the country bring people together to celebrate the beginning of a New Year – think fireworks, dancing, music, great food and even better company. Celebrate at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, check out the Biggar Bonfire or turn up the heat at Stonehaven Fireballs – each celebration offers a unique way to welcome in the New Year. The winter months aren’t an excuse to hibernate in Scotland; between January and March every year, communities across Shetland come together for a series of spectacular and unique fiery celebrations. The Up Helly Aa Fire Festivals are world-renowned starting in Scalloway in early January and finishing in late March with Delting Up Helly Aa. The largest fire festival takes place in Lerwick on the last Tuesday of January. And that’s not all… In January 2025 the Big Burns Supper in Dumfries & Galloway is the biggest Burns Night celebration on the planet commemorating the life and work of Scotland’s National Poet, Robert Burns. Up and down the country on 25th January, people will be addressing the haggis and raising a dram to one of Scotland’s most famous sons.
