Pangkor Laut Resort, a secluded island paradise, recently hosted the second edition of Opera in Paradise. The event transformed the resort into a sanctuary for renowned musicians who have left an indelible mark on music history. Their symphonic performances created an unforgettable experience for those fortunate enough to witness them in this exclusive island setting.
This year’s edition was a captivating showcase of exceptional talent, featuring three remarkable headline performers who left the audience in awe: Andrea Griminelli, a world-renowned flautist extraordinaire and Opera in Paradise’s Musical Director; Australian performers Cathy-Di Zhang, a stunning soprano; and John Longmuir, a powerful tenor. Due to a family emergency, Laura Wright was unable to perform. However, Andrea, Cathy, and John seamlessly collaborated to fill her place.
The entire performance unfolded on an extraordinary stage, set against the enchanting backdrop of Pangkor Laut Resort. The venue perfectly embodied the resort’s philosophy of ‘One island, One resort,’ blending timeless moments with the idyllic scenery of sun, sea, sand, and the ageless beauty of a 2-million-year-old rainforest.
The carefully curated lineup marked the commencement of Opera in Paradise 2024, harking back to a semi-private performance by the legendary tenor Luciano Pavarotti in 1994. Pavarotti had graced the grounds of Pangkor Laut Resort with a dazzling performance commemorating the resort’s second phase of development. Moved by the breathtaking location, he remarked, “This place is enchanting. It is paradise here. This morning, when I woke up, I went out and was truly moved, almost to tears, seeing the beauty that has been created by God.” Pavarotti even dedicated the song ‘O Paradiso’ as a homage to the resort during his recital.
To this day, the resort honours the legacy of the legendary tenor by naming its most splendid suite after him, renowned for its breathtaking views. Three decades after that pivotal performance, the artists selected for Opera in Paradise offered a heartfelt tribute, cementing Pangkor Laut Resort’s status as an icon of unmatched allure.
The magical evening began with sunset cocktails at Fisherman’s Cove, setting the stage for an unforgettable concert. Around 200 guests were mesmerised by the enchanting performances and the awe-inspiring 360-degree views from the unique concert venue, Samudra. The concert culminated in a standing ovation and enthusiastic calls for an encore.
Guests then enjoyed a carefully curated Pavarotti-themed dinner, with the opportunity to interact with the performers, making the evening one of pure delight. During the event, Dato’ Mark Yeoh, Executive Director of YTL Hotels, delivered a heartfelt speech, expressing his gratitude to everyone involved for making the Opera in Paradise an unequivocal triumph.
For those who couldn’t attend this year’s concert, mark your calendars for the upcoming third edition of Opera in Paradise, scheduled from 24-26 October, 2025, featuring a new lineup of exceptionally talented performers.
