LATAM - LogoLATAM Airlines Group has officially relaunched its highly anticipated direct flight route between Sydney and Santiago in a bold move to revitalise international travel post-pandemic. The inaugural flight, which took off at 12:35 PM yesterday, marks a significant milestone for the airline and a major boost for tourism and business ties between Australia and South America.

The excitement was palpable at Sydney Airport as passengers boarded the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner for the journey. A festive South American celebration sent the 292 passengers, including holidaymakers and business travellers, off in style. Traditional music filled the air, and alfajores—a beloved South American confection—were handed out, offering a small taste of the adventures awaiting them on the continent. The atmosphere was electric, capturing what this direct flight symbolizes: a bridge to Latin America’s rich cultures, cuisines, and landscapes.

Initially launched in 2019 but halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the route will now operate four times a week. The schedule includes flights from Sydney every Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, departing at 12:35 PM and arriving in Santiago at 11:20 AM on the same day, thanks to the 12-hour, 45-minute flight duration. This route is expected to transport up to 1,200 passengers per week, making it a key gateway for Australians seeking adventure or business opportunities in South America.

Christopher Ellis, LATAM Airlines’ Country Manager for Oceania, expressed the significance of the route’s revival, stating, “The relaunch of this key route is not just a step forward for LATAM but a commitment to enhancing the accessibility for Australians to explore South America’s vibrant cultures and breathtaking destinations. We are proud to offer this direct link, which will undoubtedly foster growth in tourism and commerce between the two regions.”

Ellis’s words capture the broader implications of direct flights, which will simplify travel to some of South America’s most iconic destinations. From LATAM’s hub in Santiago, passengers have access to onward connections to 144 cities across the continent, including bustling metropolises like Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo, as well as cultural and natural marvels such as Cusco, Bogota, and Lima.

“We know that Australians have long dreamed of exploring South America’s wonders, from the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu to the awe-inspiring Iguazu Falls and the sprawling beauty of the Amazon Rainforest,” Ellis added. “Now, with this direct route, ticking off those bucket-list destinations is easier than ever.”

Santiago to Sydney: A Seamless Return Journey

In addition to the Sydney to Santiago leg, LATAM has also announced the schedules for return flights. These flights will depart Santiago at 1:40 AM local time on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. They will arrive in Sydney at 6:30 AM the following day, with a total journey time of 14 hours and 50 minutes, ensuring a comfortable and timely return for travellers.

The return of the Sydney to Santiago route complements LATAM’s existing nonstop service between Santiago and Melbourne, which will increase to four flights per week starting December 4, 2024. This expansion underscores LATAM’s commitment to providing convenient travel options for Australians seeking to explore South America.

A Luxurious Travel Experience on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

LATAM’s relaunch isn’t just about convenience but elevating the travel experience. Passengers on the Sydney to Santiago route will fly on the state-of-the-art Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, known for its cutting-edge design and passenger comfort. The aircraft features large, auto-dimming windows, dynamic lighting that adapts to different phases of the flight, and ample storage space for all passengers.

Business class travellers, in particular, are in for a treat. LATAM has upgraded its cabin to reflect a modern, Latin-American-inspired aesthetic that prioritizes relaxation. Ergonomic seats fully recline to a flat-bed position, while temperature-controlling down comforters and more oversized pillows provide the ultimate rest. The airline has also incorporated NASA-developed Spacer Fabric technology into its seats, ensuring optimal temperature regulation and pressure relief.

LATAM’s onboard dining experience celebrates South American cuisine to enhance the journey further. A carefully curated menu developed by emerging female chefs from the region offers an authentic culinary journey from when passengers board. These dishes are perfectly paired with a wine list handpicked by Hector Vergara, Latin America’s only Master Sommelier.

Strengthening the Australia-South America Connection

The relaunch of LATAM’s Sydney to Santiago route signifies more than just the return of a flight—it’s a reinvigoration of the connection between Australia and South America. The ease of access, combined with the luxury and comfort provided by LATAM Airlines, opens new opportunities for tourism, trade, and cultural exchange between the two continents.
