In a bold move that solidifies its position as the leading U.S. carrier for international travel, United Airlines has announced its most extensive global expansion. This monumental growth plan will add eight new destinations to its summer 2025 schedule, offering travellers an unparalleled opportunity to explore some of the world’s most exciting and lesser-known locations. With service spanning from Greenland’s rugged landscapes to Italy’s cultural heart, United is setting new benchmarks in global aviation.
A New Era for United Airlines: Summer 2025 Expansion
Set to launch in May 2025, United’s expansion includes new nonstop routes from the Newark/New York hub to five destinations that no other U.S. airline serves. These destinations include Nuuk in Greenland, Palermo in Italy, Bilbao in Spain, Madeira Island, and Faro in Portugal. From Washington D.C./Dulles, the airline will introduce nonstop flights to Dakar, Senegal, marking its first foray into this part of West Africa. New seasonal routes will also connect Washington to Nice, France, and Venice, Italy, further strengthening United’s dominance in transatlantic travel.
This expansion marks the carrier’s largest-ever transatlantic schedule, with more than 760 weekly flights to over 40 destinations across Europe, Africa, and Asia. No other U.S. airline matches United’s scale, offering 800 daily flights to and from 147 international destinations. This includes 40 nonstop routes exclusive to United, ensuring travellers can access unique and culturally rich destinations across the globe.
“No other airline offers our customers access to as many unique international destinations from the U.S. as United,” said Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances. “Our network provides unmatched choice for those seeking seaside getaways, adventure travel, or urban escapes.”
The New Destinations at a Glance
United’s newly unveiled destinations are not just more dots on the map—they represent gateways to distinct cultural, historical, and natural experiences.
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Launching May 1, 2025, United will become the only U.S. airline to serve Mongolia, with seasonal nonstop flights from Tokyo Narita. This exciting addition comes as Mongolia’s tourism industry flourishes, attracting adventurers drawn to its untamed landscapes and rich nomadic culture. Ulaanbaatar, the country’s capital, is the perfect gateway to explore activities such as reindeer sleigh rides, camel racing, and breathtaking natural vistas.
Kaohsiung, Taiwan
Starting July 11, 2025, Kaohsiung will welcome United’s new nonstop flights from Tokyo Narita, becoming the only U.S. airline to serve the southern Taiwanese city. Known for its fusion of modern urban landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Kaohsiung offers travellers attractions like the Love River, Lotus Pond, and its famous street art scene. United’s new year-round service provides a convenient one-stop option for U.S. travellers.
Dakar, Senegal
United is significantly expanding its African network by introducing a year-round, nonstop route between Washington D.C./Dulles and Dakar, Senegal. Launching May 23, 2025, this flight positions Dakar as the gateway to West Africa, offering travellers access to stunning beaches, lush forests, and Senegal’s deep archaeological history. As Senegal’s tourism industry grows, this route is a welcome addition for travellers seeking new African destinations.
Nuuk, Greenland
For adventurers seeking something off the beaten path, United’s new service to Nuuk, Greenland, delivers. Starting June 14, 2025, travellers will enjoy twice-weekly seasonal flights from Newark, directly linking to the world’s northernmost capital. Nuuk provides easy access to Arctic expeditions, hiking, and wildlife viewing, all under the summer’s midnight sun. The United States is the first and only carrier to serve this Arctic paradise.
Palermo, Italy
Beginning May 21, 2025, United will operate three weekly seasonal flights between Newark and Palermo, making it the only U.S. airline to offer lie-flat Business Class seats on this route. Travelers can explore Sicily’s rich history, renowned architecture, and some of the most beautiful beaches in Italy. With demand for Italian travel continuing to soar, United is perfectly positioned to capitalize on this growing trend with its latest route to Palermo.
Bilbao, Spain
United’s new flight to Bilbao, starting May 31, 2025, further cements its dominance in Spain. The only U.S. airline to serve this northern Spanish city, United will connect travellers to the heart of the Basque Country. Bilbao is a must-visit destination for culture enthusiasts, famous for its avant-garde architecture, including the Guggenheim Museum and its renowned culinary scene.
Madeira Island and Faro, Portugal
Expanding its presence in Portugal, United will add two new routes to its network. Travellers can now access Madeira Island and Faro, with flights beginning in May and June 2025. Madeira’s towering cliffs and lush green landscapes offer a tropical escape, while Faro is the gateway to the Algarve’s golden beaches and luxurious resorts. United’s presence in Portugal will be unmatched as it becomes the only U.S. airline to offer nonstop flights to five Portuguese destinations.
Transatlantic Dominance and Beyond
With this expansion, United continues to reign supreme over the transatlantic skies. The airline is doubling its commitment to providing more options for its customers by extending service to some of its most popular destinations earlier in the season, including Athens, Greece, Venice, Italy, and Dubrovnik, Croatia. These additional flights will give travellers more flexibility to explore Europe’s iconic cities.
The airline’s global footprint also expands to the Pacific, with new flights from Tokyo Narita to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and Kaohsiung, Taiwan. United will also add year-round, nonstop service between Tokyo Narita and Koror, Palau, further opening up the Pacific for American travellers.
A Sky-High Future for United Airlines
United’s historic expansion underscores its ambition to provide more international travel options than ever before. With this new roster of destinations, travellers will have access to an even more comprehensive range of experiences, from the cultural wonders of Bilbao and Palermo to the natural beauty of Nuuk and Faro. The airline’s commitment to innovation, comfort, and customer choice is evident as it reshapes the global aviation landscape.
All new routes are subject to government approval and will be available for booking on United.com and the United app.
