Mar del Cabo by Velas Resorts introduces a sweet new workshop to create traditional Mexican ice cream, Nieves de Garrafa, also known as “bottled snow.” Using local ingredients and wooden barrels, the workshop provides a unique opportunity to explore Mexican culinary traditions in a picturesque setting at the luxury boutique hotel against the stunning backdrop of the Sea of Cortez.
Guided by a chef, participants will handcraft their own nieves de garrafa, learning the art of making this delicious ice cream, a Mexican tradition dating back centuries. Originating in Mexico’s colonial period, Nieves de Garrafa is created by pouring a mixture of fruit, milk, sugar and ice into a large garrafa (bottle). The garrafa is placed inside a wooden barrel filled with ice and salt, which cools the mixture to a thicker, ice cream-like consistency. During this one-hour beachside session, guests will be provided with the materials and ingredients needed to make their own ice cream, not only learning the process but also the rich cultural context behind the refreshing treat. Choosing from three flavors – including coconut milk, roasted corn, or lemon basil, participants will customize their own treat. Following, the chef will guide participants on recipes using the nieves de garrafa to make ice cream sandwiches, cocktails and other culinary treats.
Mar del Cabo’s Nieves de Garrafa workshop is priced at $30 USD per person, inclusive of all materials and ingredients. Each workshop requires a minimum of two guests with a maximum of ten.
