The Festival’s first performance in September began with ‘Marie Antoinette’ by Malandain Ballet Biarritz, a contemporary ballet that captures the opulence of life within Château de Versailles, centred around the iconic Queen of France, Marie-Antoinette. The performance beautifully intertwines with the befitting music of Haydn symphonies, offering a fresh perspective to the demonized queen. It depicts the rise of the youthful queen, often misunderstood for her extravagance, and her tragic downfall, set to the moving melody of ‘Dance of the Blissful Spirits’ from the renowned opera Orpheus and Eurydice by Christoph Willibald Gluck. The live orchestral accompaniment, L’Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal, flew in from Versailles itself, enhances the spectacle, alongside the captivating choreography by Thierry Malandain. The stunning costumes, designed by renowned fashion designer Jorge Gallardo, add to the visual splendour of the production. The majestic set designs perfectly recreate the grandeur of Versailles right in the heart of Bangkok.
