In a spectacular fusion of art, nature, and the universe, Sweden’s iconic Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi is gearing up to launch its most ambitious project yet: the space-themed ‘In Orbit’ Icebar. As Icehotel celebrates its 35th anniversary, the new Icebar promises to take visitors on a captivating journey through space, transforming the traditional Arctic experience into an otherworldly adventure. Designed by the creative masterminds at PinPin Studio and inspired by the experiences of Sweden’s first astronaut, Christer Fuglesang, the Icebar will open to the public on November 8, 2024.
A Space Journey in the Heart of the Arctic
Located just 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, Icehotel has long been a symbol of innovation, offering guests a unique opportunity to stay in a hotel crafted from natural ice and snow. But with the unveiling of ‘In Orbit’, this world-renowned destination is about to elevate its appeal to an entirely new level—both figuratively and literally. The redesigned Icebar, a permanent fixture in Icehotel 365, will immerse guests in the surreal experience of space travel.
Imagine walking into an Arctic ice structure, only to feel like stepping onto a spacecraft. Guests will embark on a simulated journey through space, from launch to orbit, complete with views of Earth from above and, finally, a descent towards the International Space Station (ISS). This multi-sensory experience has been made possible thanks to the creative input of Christer Fuglesang, Sweden’s celebrated astronaut who has flown to space twice aboard the Space Shuttle.
Collaboration with Astronaut Christer Fuglesang
Christer Fuglesang, a national hero in Sweden, lent his expertise to the creation of ‘In Orbit,’ ensuring the design was visually striking and grounded in the authentic experiences of space travel. “We all share a common curiosity and desire to explore the unknown,” Fuglesang remarked during the project’s announcement. “Incorporating my space missions into the Icebar’s design is truly rewarding. It’s a chance to inspire others to dream about the stars.”
The Icebar’s intricate design includes a life-sized snow sculpture of an astronaut, representing Fuglesang’s experiences aboard the ISS. Visitors will marvel at the icy details and engage with interactive features that simulate space travel. Every element—from the frosty walls to the luminous ice sculptures—has been carefully crafted to replicate the stark beauty of space, while the Arctic surroundings of Jukkasjärvi add a uniquely terrestrial counterpoint.
PinPin Studio: Art Meets Science in the Arctic
PinPin Studio, the design firm tasked with creating the Icebar, has previously worked on multiple ice-based projects, including art suites at Icehotel and the design of Icebar Stockholm. Founders Christian Strömqvist and Karl-Johan Ekeroth are no strangers to blending art with nature, but they found the cosmic theme particularly inspiring.
“For us, the connection between the Arctic and space is quite natural,” Strömqvist explains. “Both are extreme environments—one in the far north of our planet and the other far above it. In both, isolation, silence, and the sheer beauty of nature dominate.”
The designers are working closely with Icehotel’s build team, ice production specialists, and an array of international artists to construct the 90-cubic-meter Icebar, using 80 cubic meters of snow and an additional 90 cubic meters of ice harvested from the nearby Torne River.
The Grand Opening: November 8, 2024
Icehotel’s 35th anniversary will be marked by the grand opening of ‘In Orbit’ on November 8, 2024, when the permanent Icehotel 365 section will be unveiled to the public. The seasonal section of the hotel, which includes a range of artistic ice suites, will follow suit, opening on December 13, 2024.
As one of Sweden’s most iconic tourist destinations, Icehotel has become a must-visit for travellers worldwide. Each winter, artists from around the globe gather in Jukkasjärvi to sculpt incredible works of art from ice and snow, making every visit unique. This year, however, the hotel is set to exceed expectations with the launch of ‘In Orbit’, offering a futuristic twist to its already celebrated Arctic experience.
Icehotel’s Legacy of Innovation
Since its opening in 1989, Icehotel has been more than just a place to stay—it’s an art exhibition, a natural wonder, and an ever-evolving destination that celebrates the raw beauty of ice. Every year, a new version of the hotel is built, with designers using ice harvested from the Torne River to construct an ethereal space that melts away by spring, returning to its natural origins. However, with the introduction of Icehotel 365, a section of the hotel remains open year-round, allowing guests to experience the wonders of ice, even in summer.
To commemorate its 35th anniversary, Icehotel is introducing the space-themed Icebar and hosting a series of interactive art experiences outside the entrance. Visitors are invited to engage with ice and snow sculptures and participate in the unveiling of this year’s Icehotel design.
An Unforgettable Arctic Experience
For travellers seeking something out of this world—literally—Icehotel’s ‘In Orbit’ Icebar is set to be one of the most exciting travel experiences of 2024. Whether you’re an astronomy enthusiast, an art lover, or simply looking for an extraordinary adventure, Icehotel promises a visit unlike any other. The space-themed bar, combined with the natural Arctic beauty and the stunning architecture of the Icehotel, creates an unparalleled fusion of art, science, and nature.
As Icehotel looks to the stars for inspiration, it continues to push the boundaries of innovation, ensuring that every guest walks away with awe-inspiring and lasting memories. So, suit up, step into ‘In Orbit,’ and get ready to leave Earth behind—if only for a few hours.
