European self-guided walk operator, On Foot Holidays, has launched a new, week-long hiking route in the Cilento National Park in Campania south of Rome, which showcases traditional Italy to its core – unspoilt medieval villages, ancient ruins, rolling green hills, colourful fishing villages, a postcard coastline and artisan food and wine
On Foot Holidays is offering Australians and Kiwis the chance to enjoy a low footprint, high immersion sojourn through Campania in 2025 but at current 2024 prices if the hike is booked by September 30, 2024.
Available in April, May, June, September and October, the just-released, seven-night hiking trip covers 8-23km per day and is graded medium in effort, with luggage transferred between hotels each day so walkers carry just a day pack along the entire route.
Curated for independent travellers, the hike sees walkers stay at a series of family-run B&Bs and farms and character-filled inns and hotels, enjoying authentic Italian cuisine sourced from local produce.
In Roman times, this region of Campania was known as Campania Felix (Happy Land) and today locals are still renowned for their cheerful friendliness. On Foot Holidays’ new Italian walk starts in the harbour town of Agropoli and traces picturesque coastline before climbing into the mountains with superb views opening up over the Amalfi Coast and Capri.
The trail visits one of Italy’s prettiest villages – the fortified, medieval hamlet of Castellabate – and also the quaint mountain villages of Lustra, Castigliano and Rocca Cilento, with panoramic walking over the peak of Monte Stella. There follows a lovely descending path through chestnut woods to the tiny village of Galdo and onto the walk’s finish in the enchanting fishing port of Acciaroli, where sandy beaches are lapped by the Mediterranean.
For walkers with time to spare, an added night at nearby Paestum is recommended to explore the remains of the stunning ancient Greek city with its three temples.
This holiday is also a chance to try out On Foot’s new navigational app, which contains all the GPS tracks, route directions, itinerary and travel advice in one place, significantly reducing the amount walkers will carry.
On Foot Holidays’ Cilento National Park walk includes seven nights’ B&B and inn accommodation, daily breakfasts, three dinners, all luggage transfers between hotels, and the On Foot app for navigation and all holiday information. The holiday costs from £1145 per person, twin-share (about A$2218 depending on exchange rates).
Australians and Kiwis can do the walk this year or, if choosing 2025, pay current 2024 prices if they book by September 30, 2024, beating a forecast price rise estimated at 5-10 per cent.
