Marriott Hotels, the namesake brand of Marriott Bonvoy’s extraordinary portfolio of over 30 hotel brands, today announced the opening of Adelaide Marriott Hotel. In a style befitting its worldwide reputation for timeless hospitality and modern and sophisticated spaces, the first Marriott Hotel in Adelaide, South Australia has opened its doors as part of a reverent transformation of one of the city’s most treasured architectural landmarks. The new Adelaide Marriott Hotel is set within the historic General Post Office (GPO) building, a much-loved landmark that has occupied its prime CBD position on the corner of King William and Franklin Streets for more than 150 years.
The new Adelaide Marriott Hotel will join four other Marriott Hotels along Australia’s eastern seaboard adding to the brands portfolio in the country. Its arrival is also a milestone moment, marking the 600th Marriott International property in the Asia Pacific region, excluding China.
“With the opening of Adelaide Marriott Hotel, we continue to live our legacy of wonderful hospitality and build momentum for the brand’s evolution and appeal. Located in the iconic GPO building, this hotel will become a true flagship property for Marriott Hotels as we continue to deliver contemporary design and elevated guest experiences,” said Jason Nuell, Area Vice President, Marriott International, Australia, New Zealand and Pacific. “With spaces to connect, work, or unwind, coupled with heartfelt service true to the brand’s promise, we aim to make Adelaide a must-see destination for domestic and international travelers alike.”
The design approach is an intersection of old and new. The classical modern focus gives rise to a captivating interior where historical sentiment meets polished innovation. The design is dynamic, thoughtful, and inventive. The narrative throughout the hotel celebrates many elements of the GPO and South Australia including paying homage to the pioneer and Postmaster General, Sir Charles Todd.
This hotel is distinctly ‘Adelaide’ in style and shares through design the city’s many stories such as the gridded city, the town’s rich history, art and culture as well as local materials in an abstract form such sandstone and corrugated iron. The color palette references South Australia’s acclaimed wine region by connecting the application of color to the lifecycle of the grapevine. This is reflected through furniture, art, and the custom carpet.
Behind the freestone façade of the original grand postal headquarters, a modern tower rises 14-storeys high, enveloping 285 exquisitely appointed guestrooms, including 11 spacious suites and a 145 square metre Presidential Suite, all capturing sweeping views of the Adelaide city skyline or the leafy grounds of Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga. The hotel’s prime location offers travellers easy access to the city centre. It is just 15 minutes from Adelaide Airport and within walking distance of Adelaide Oval, the shopping precinct of Rundle Mall, the iconic Central Markets, and Her Majesty’s Theatre. Right at the hotel’s doorstep, guests can catch the tram that will take them along the historic North Terrace or out to Glenelg Beach.
Catering equally to leisure and business travelers, Adelaide Marriott Hotel features three sophisticated dining outlets. With space to dine, socialize, or conduct business, the Greatroom is the heart of the hotel and provides a stylish ambiance for memorable evenings. As travelers and locals come together in this sophisticated yet welcoming space, there’s an energy that draws you in and leads to unique experiences. Penny Blue, a contemporary dining experience that encapsulates the heart of modern Australian cuisine with a nod to nostalgia and a vibrant laneway bar Exchange Lane, open to morning commuters for barista made coffee and transforming into the perfect evening bar for a wine, cocktails and shared dishes. Other on-site facilities include a fitness studio and 18-metre indoor swimming pool, along with more than 762 square meters of meeting and event space, including a vast 295 square meter ballroom and a 24/7 M Club, an exclusive club lounge available to Elite Marriott Bonvoy Members and guests staying on executive floors.
A curated collection of artwork graces every floor and corridor of this new addition to Adelaide’s flourishing hospitality landscape – from its breathtaking entrance lobby to the spacious reception area and lounge, restaurant, guest rooms and function spaces. From vast wall sculptures in shimmering copper to intriguing archival photographs, culturally significant pieces by First Nations artists of the APY Arts Centre Collective in the state’s far north, and epic aerial imagery; these specially commissioned works celebrate the GPO’s rich history as well as the textures, colors, and stories of the Australian landscape.
Paul Gallop, General Manager, Adelaide Marriott Hotel said, “Our prime city location makes Adelaide Marriott Hotel the perfect launching pad for interstate and overseas visitors to tap into all that the destination has to offer. From premier cultural, sporting, culinary, and business events, to exploring world-renowned wine regions, Adelaide is booming. We are excited to open this milestone hotel, the first Marriott Hotel in South Australia, and look forward to welcoming our guests to experience our heartfelt service and wonderful hospitality.”
What’s unique about Adelaide Marriott Hotel’s offering is the connection the hotel has made to both the history of the spectacular building in which it is housed and the legendary force behind the building of the Overland Telegraph Line, Sir Charles Todd.
Paul Gallop added, “By celebrating the stories of that feat, as well as the GPO and its soaring Clock Tower, through artworks, our food and beverage offering, and the names given to our many suites, dining spaces, and function rooms – we’ve woven a warm sense of nostalgia throughout these stunning new surroundings that will make every visit memorable.”
