CAPA - Centre for AviationIn a groundbreaking move towards transparency and environmental responsibility, CAPA—Centre for Aviation, a leading authority in market intelligence for the aviation and travel industry and part of the Aviation Week Network—has launched its innovative Sustainability Data Suite. This comprehensive resource compiles and analyzes data from approximately 100 airlines and airline groups, representing over 75% of global aviation traffic and CO2 emissions in 2023.

Marco Navarria, CAPA’s Content & Marketing Director, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “With a greater than ever emphasis globally on sustainability, it is important to understand and track the progress of the airline industry when it comes to sustainability. We are extremely excited to announce the launch of the CAPA Sustainability Data Suite, which provides a single source overview of the sector’s progress, illuminating the performance of the airline industry as it continues along its vital and ambitious path towards decarbonization.”

This pioneering suite, available in the Data Centre section of CAPA’s website, delivers a visually engaging, detailed comparison of airlines’ sustainability performance. The suite incorporates data from public airline reports and CAPA’s industry-leading products, offering a holistic view that includes financial performance and operational statistics alongside sustainability metrics.

The Sustainability Data Suite tracks over three dozen metrics, enabling users to gauge the airline industry’s progress toward environmental goals. Key features include:

  • Total Carbon Emissions: This provides a visual reference for the emissions of individual airlines and groups based on reported scope one emissions or fuel use over 12 months.
  • Emissions by Traffic Type: This report breaks down emissions by passenger and cargo traffic, offering insights into different segments of the industry.
  • Carbon Emissions Intensity: Measures unit emissions intensity against various operational metrics such as Available Seat Kilometers (ASKs) and Revenue Passenger Kilometers (RPKs).
  • Emissions Intensity Variables: Examines factors like average fleet age, load factor, and stage length, illustrating their impact on emissions performance.
  • Emissions Intensity Over Time: Highlights reductions in per-unit CO2 emissions, showcasing airlines’ efficiency improvement.
  • Average Fleet Age: Identifies airlines with modern fleets, indicating higher efficiency.
  • Breakeven Carbon Price Comparison: This method uses CAPA’s extensive financial data to show the operating profit/loss per tonne of CO2 emitted.
  • Emissions and Revenue Comparison: Measures carbon intensity against revenue, providing a comprehensive view of efficiency.
  • SAF Risk Matrix: This matrix assesses the industry’s vulnerability to the transition towards sustainable aviation fuel, highlighting profit margins and fuel costs.
  • Sustainability Risk Resilience Matrix: This matrix evaluates financial risk from decarbonization efforts, comparing break-even carbon prices and unit emissions for passenger and freight operations.
  • CO2 Emissions Reporting vs. Fuel Use Calculations: This section examines discrepancies in reported emissions versus those calculated from fuel use, ensuring transparency and accuracy.

This data is presented in a user-friendly, graphical format, enabling quick and straightforward comparisons. Additionally, the data suite is integrated into CAPA Profiles, providing in-depth information and performance trends for individual airlines and groups over time.

The database offers information for the past five years and will be regularly updated with the latest data as airlines report new sustainability metrics and financial results. This ensures that users can access the most current and relevant information, making the Sustainability Data Suite an indispensable tool for industry stakeholders.

The launch of CAPA’s Sustainability Data Suite marks a significant step forward in the aviation industry’s efforts to achieve its decarbonization goals. As the industry faces increasing scrutiny and demand for sustainable practices, CAPA’s new resource provides invaluable insights and a comprehensive view of progress and challenges.
