Octopus grilled to perfection, a menu favouriteOne of the joys of travel is the discovery of hidden gems off the beaten path, away from mainstream tourists.  That can be said about the idyllic island of Malta in general. However, it is even more applicable to Palazzo Parisio, a private palace still owned by a resident family that opens the house and its lovely garden to visitors.  Despite its affiliation with the Knights Hospitaller, better known as the Knights Of Malta, Malta is not widely recognised as a place associated with modern-day nobility.

That is not an oxymoron, modern-day nobility; today’s owners of Palazzo Parisio are a thoroughly modern family proud to maintain their history and share it with the general public.  Located a short drive from Valletta in the town of Naxxar, the discreet façade of Palazzo Parisio belies the magnificence behind it.  The splendid Grand Hall makes an appropriately opulent first impression enhanced further by a monumental staircase leading to a set of rooms superb in beauty and historical preservation.

Palazzo Parisio is over 300 years old and remains regal across the street from the stately church in Naxxar’s Victoria Square.  The two buildings complement each other in architectural style, but only Palazzo Parisio has magnificent gardens where you can enjoy the outdoors in the fine Mediterranean weather.  Among the manicured trees, shrubs, and flowers are walkways to stroll around the grounds before taking a seat in The Garden Restaurant, one of Malta’s most charming venues for lunch in sublime surroundings.  An extensive menu with numerous irresistible options will leave no patron hungry after a delicious meal with excellent Maltese wines.  Virtually unknown outside the country but well appreciated by those in the know, Malta’s vineyards produce a variety of varietals to please the palate as accompaniments to meals served here at The Garden and everywhere else in Malta.  As reflected in The Garden’s menu, Malta respects its culinary traditions while adding unexpected touches to classic meals to make for remarkable taste sensations, especially regarding dessert.

Patrons of The Garden Restaurant who linger over lunch may take afternoon tea before moving indoors to Luna, Palazzo Parisio’s fine dining restaurant, for dinner.  An exclusive space with limited tables, only the best from masterful chef David Giacomelli’s kitchen is served in this blissful atmosphere.  With a perfect balance of friendliness and professionalism, the outstanding service is as much a highlight of the Luna dining experience as the food and wine.  In addition to dinner, Luna hosts wine-tasting events that make an occasion even more memorable.

Palazzo Parisio does not offer accommodation, which means sophisticated diners can enjoy a stay at The Phoenicia Malta, the country’s legendary hotel where well-heeled guests have included Queen Elizabeth II and many other names of note. However, all guests here are treated like royalty.  The Phoenicia Malta is only a short ride from Palazzo Parisio, and you can easily arrange a car to go to and return from one of Malta’s secret jewels.
