Relais et Chateaux 70 anniversary logoIn 1954, the concept of luxurious travel underwent a transformative change with the birth of Relais & Châteaux, an association formed by eight properties between Paris and Nice under the guiding philosophy of ‘La Route du Bonheur’ or ‘The Road to Happiness.’ Seventy years later, this remarkable movement has flourished, encompassing over 580 properties in more than 65 countries. Their core values, first championed by founders Nelly and Marcel Tilloy, continue to guide the association’s mission, which Laurent Gardinier now steers.

The 1960s ushered in a significant expansion beyond France, welcoming the first European destinations to its fold. In 1974, a pivotal merger with Châteaux Hôtels marked the creation of Relais & Châteaux as we know it today. This historic year also saw the birth of the Relais Gourmands label, further emphasizing the importance of fine dining within the association’s collection.

The global footprint grew exponentially in 1975, including properties from the United States, Canada, and Japan, ultimately leading to a presence in 40 countries by 1992. As the global network expanded, so did its culinary prowess, culminating in Relais & Châteaux becoming the home to 376 Michelin Stars, including 40 Green Stars, recognizing excellence in sustainable gastronomy.

In 2014, the association made a bold declaration at UNESCO with 20 commitments to preserve world cuisines, celebrate the beauty and taste of diverse cultures, and strive for a more humane world. Today, this profound vision still serves as the cornerstone of Relais & Châteaux, resonating in each property through a shared passion for cuisine, hospitality, and a commitment to unforgettable guest experiences.

As the association commemorates its 70th anniversary, Relais & Châteaux’s reputation as a standard-bearer in luxury travel remains undiminished. Their deeply rooted network of independent entrepreneurs is driven by a love of their craft and a desire to build lasting relationships with each guest. This anniversary is a celebration of years passed and a reaffirmation of the founding vision: to inspire discovery through a unique blend of world-class cuisine and hospitality.
