Model aircraft have helped airlines, aerospace professionals, and aviation enthusiasts envision the history and technological triumphs of flight in miniature scale for over a century. Building models became a widespread hobby, and flying remote-controlled model aircraft also evolved into a popular sport. As commercial airlines rapidly updated their fleets with more advanced airliners, they contracted with premier model makers to create minutely detailed models to promote their new aircraft, including cutaway models with intricate cabin interiors. This exhibition presents a selection of thirteen outstanding display and remote-control flying airplane models from the collections of SFO Museum.
A Cut Above: Airplane Models from the SFO Museum Collection can be viewed pre-security in the Mayor Edwin M. Lee International Departures Hall, San Francisco International Airport. This exhibition is on display for all Airport visitors from March 2, 2024, to January 26, 2025. There is no charge to view the exhibition.
