In a bold move that underscores its leadership in luxury Antarctic expeditions, Antarctica21 has announced the construction of the Magellan Discoverer, a state-of-the-art vessel set to redefine the frontiers of polar travel in the 2026-27 season. From its conception, the Magellan Discoverer is designed not merely as a means to explore the icy realms of Antarctica but as a beacon of innovation and environmental responsibility.

The introduction of the Magellan Discoverer signifies a pivotal moment for Antarctica21 and the high-end segment of the Antarctic travel market. Crafted as a sister ship to the acclaimed Magellan Explorer, the new vessel embodies elegance and advanced technical features, promising to deliver seamless and sustainable adventures in the spectacular Antarctic region.

Jaime Vásquez, President of Antarctica21, shared his vision: “The Magellan Discoverer represents our relentless pursuit of excellence. With cutting-edge technology and a firm commitment to sustainability, this vessel is poised to offer our travellers unmatched comfort and immersive experiences in one of the planet’s most pristine environments.”

Echoing the Magellan Explorer’s design, the Magellan Discoverer adheres to the PC6 ice class specifications, ensuring safe navigation through icy waters. However, it has significant enhancements, including a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system and heat recovery technologies, showcasing Antarctica21’s dedication to minimizing environmental impact.

The vessel is tailor-made for the company’s signature fly-and-sail operations, offering a smooth transition for guests flying over the Drake Passage directly to the heart of Antarctica. Accommodating up to 76 guests across 40 cabins, the ship’s interior design marries adventure with luxury, featuring king-size beds, private balconies, and a selection of suites designed for families and small groups.

Aboard, guests will find a wet science lab supporting Antarctic research, indicating Antarctica21’s commitment to contributing to global knowledge of the region. Additionally, amenities such as a sauna with panoramic views, a well-equipped gym, and an elevator serving five decks ensure guests’ comfort and well-being during their expedition.

Claudio Bobadilla, Fleet Director at Antarctica21, expressed his excitement: “The Magellan Discoverer project is a culmination of our experience and partnership with ASENAV shipbuilders. With several design enhancements inspired by our learnings from the Magellan Explorer, we aim to surpass our guests’ expectations and set a new benchmark in expedition cruising.”

The vessel’s hybrid propulsion system, featuring ABB’s Azipod® units and a Corvus Energy Storage System, promises a quieter and more stable journey, fully immersing guests in the Antarctic’s serene beauty.

The announcement comes on the heels of Antarctica21’s Explorers House opening in Punta Arenas, a private lounge offering guests a unique space to prepare for their journey. Like the Magellan Discoverer, this initiative reflects Antarctica21’s commitment to providing exceptional, personalized experiences for travellers seeking adventure in the Antarctic.

As Antarctica21 prepares to welcome the Magellan Discoverer to its fleet, the company continues to pioneer sustainable and luxurious Antarctic expeditions, inviting adventurers to explore the frozen continent in unparalleled elegance and comfort.
