Mr. Nithee Seeprae, TAT Deputy Governor for Marketing CommunicationThailand is leading the charge in an era where travel is not just about destinations but the impact and experiences it offers. At the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2024, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) unveiled a groundbreaking approach, pivoting towards a more meaningful, sustainable direction in tourism.

Ms Thapanee Kiatphaibool, the esteemed Governor of TAT, articulated this new vision at the ATF, which is now in its remarkable 42nd year. She emphasized the forum’s significance as a pivotal platform for ASEAN tourism promotion, comprising high-level components such as meetings of ASEAN Tourism Ministers and the TRAVEX trade show. TAT’s presence at the forum underscores its commitment to promoting ASEAN as a unique global tourism hotspot.

The ATF 2024, under the theme “Quality and Responsible Tourism – Sustaining ASEAN Future,” resonates deeply with TAT’s strategic shift towards high-value and sustainable tourism. This thematic alignment was palpably evident at the Thailand Stand, inaugurated on January 24th with dignitaries like H.E. Morakot Sriswasdi, Ambassador of Thailand to Lao PDR, and Mr. Kitti Chaodee, Secretary to Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports.

The Stand was a microcosm of Thailand’s rich tapestry of experiences, showcasing a range of travel options that embody Thai soft powers and sustainable goals. Highlights included Thai massage demonstrations, reflecting Thailand’s esteemed status in health and wellness tourism. This was complemented by collaborations with critical players like Thai Airways International and the Isan Tourism Industry Trade Association, illustrating a concerted effort to enhance ASEAN intra-regional tourism and connectivity.

TAT’s strategic direction is not just talk; the numbers tell a compelling story. In 2023, Thailand welcomed over 28 million tourists, generating a staggering 1.2 trillion Baht in revenue, with a significant 35% stemming from ASEAN countries. For 2024, the targets are even more ambitious: 3 trillion Baht in revenue, split between international (1.92 trillion Baht) and domestic tourism (1.08 trillion Baht), with an estimated 35 million foreign arrivals and 200 million domestic trips.

Mr. Nithee Seeprae, TAT Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, eloquently outlined TAT’s blueprint for achieving these goals. The focus is enhancing Thailand’s image as a sustainable and responsible tourism destination, elevating standards, and leveraging Thai soft powers to offer meaningful travel experiences.

TAT’s commitment to sustainable tourism is further exemplified by the Thailand Tourism Awards and its Sustainable Tourism Goals (STGs), aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The Awards have recently introduced Low-carbon and Sustainability categories, underscoring Thailand’s dedication to low-carbon tourism. Furthermore, the STAR (Sustainable Tourism Acceleration Rating) system has certified 497 businesses in Thailand, a testament to the country’s earnest efforts in sustainable tourism practices.

TAT’s revitalized marketing direction for 2024 focuses on attracting high-spending segments inclined towards more extended stays, local exploration, and environmental stewardship. This includes luxury experiences, health and wellness tourism, family-friendly holidays, and visits to secondary destinations.

Crucial to this strategy is ASEAN connectivity. By enhancing transportation infrastructure across air, land, rail, and maritime, Thailand aims to facilitate more accessible, affordable travel within the region. Such connectivity is pivotal for boosting the nation’s tourism industry and generating substantial economic benefits.

This visionary approach by TAT at ATF 2024 marks a significant milestone in global tourism. It’s not just about seeing new places; it’s about creating a sustainable future for travel. Thailand’s pivot to sustainable, high-value tourism is a clarion call to the world, showcasing how a nation can harmoniously balance economic growth with environmental stewardship and cultural preservation.

In essence, Thailand is hosting tourists and inviting the world to be part of a transformative journey. It is a journey where each traveller becomes a catalyst for positive change, and each takes a step towards a more sustainable, connected, and meaningful world.
