In an unparalleled demographic shift, Australia welcomed a record number of skilled and working holiday travellers in 2023, marking a historic moment in the nation’s population growth and economic landscape. According to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the country’s population saw a staggering increase of 518,000 people during the 2023 financial year, a 73% leap from the previous year. This surge signals a post-pandemic recovery and a robust influx of talent and tourism revitalizing the Australian economy.
The ABS report underscores a significant 6.9% annual increase in skilled (permanent) visas, the highest among all permanent visa categories. Similarly, working holiday visas witnessed a nearly 50% rise, indicating a vibrant mix of professionals and adventurers gracing Australian shores. Notably, the top contributors to net overseas migration include India, China, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, and Australia, reflecting a diverse and global talent pool.
Flight Centre Corporate, encompassing FCM Travel and Corporate Traveller, echoes this trend, observing an average 98.5% increase in business travel from these countries in 2023 compared to the previous year. Melissa Elf, Managing Director of Flight Centre Corporate ANZ and FCM Global COO, highlights the significant growth in inbound business travel bookings, particularly from the Philippines, New Zealand, South Africa, and China, which have at least doubled since 2022.
The reopening of Australia’s borders in February 2022 marked a turning point, unleashing a wave of business travellers eager to engage with Australia’s renowned education, mining, health, construction, and government sectors. Sydney and Melbourne remain hotspots for these travellers, while the mining boom has propelled Perth and Brisbane into the limelight as critical destinations.
Western Australia leads the states in population growth, with a 3.1% increase over the 2022 financial year, followed by Victoria and Queensland. This growth is not just a statistic; it represents a vibrant, multicultural influx enriching the Australian fabric – socially, economically, and culturally.
Elf articulates the allure of Australia for international businesspeople, citing the country’s lifestyle, stable and globally connected economy, and reputation as a safe and reliable global trade partner. This appeal is quantified in the soaring corporate travel bookings from various countries, with the Philippines leading at a 149% increase, followed by New Zealand, South Africa, and China.
As Australia navigates this new era of growth and diversity, the impact of these skilled and holiday travellers will undoubtedly shape its economic and cultural landscape for years to come.
