New York CityThe United States has marked a significant upswing in international travel in a stunning display of global connectivity and travel enthusiasm. According to the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO), September 2023 witnessed a remarkable 19.3% increase in international visitor arrivals compared to last year, totalling an impressive 5,775,143 visitors. This surge reflects a year-over-year growth and signals a return to pre-pandemic vibrancy, reaching 86.2% of the pre-COVID visitor volume of September 2019.

The data reveals a consistent upward trajectory, marking September 2023 as the 30th consecutive month of year-over-year growth in international arrivals. Notably, none of the top 20 tourist-generating countries to the U.S. reported a decrease in visitor volume, underscoring the widespread nature of this travel resurgence. India led the recovery charge, achieving 136% of its September 2019 visitation figures, while China lagged behind at 48% of its pre-pandemic numbers.

Canada topped the list of source markets with 1,548,692 visitors, followed closely by Mexico, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan. These five countries alone constituted 61.9% of the international arrivals, highlighting their pivotal role in U.S. tourism.

In a parallel trend, U.S. citizen outbound travel departures also saw a notable increase, with 8,004,891 departures in September 2023 – a 16.7% rise from September 2022 and surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 5.4%. This trend was driven by a strong inclination towards North American destinations, as Mexico and Canada collectively accounted for nearly half of the total U.S. outbound travel.

The year-to-date figures are equally telling, with a 25.6% increase in U.S. citizen international departures, emphasizing a rejuvenated global travel landscape. Europe emerged as the second-largest market for U.S. outbound travellers, witnessing an 18.3% increase in visitation compared to last year.

These numbers are more than just statistics; they represent a resounding vote of confidence in global travel and a testament to the enduring allure of the United States as a travel destination. The data underscores a robust recovery and a renewed sense of wanderlust among travellers worldwide, signalling a bright future for international tourism.

This surge in travel is not just about the numbers but also about the stories, experiences, and connections forged across borders. It’s a narrative of resilience, a global community’s response to unprecedented challenges, and a collective embrace of exploration and cultural exchange.

In the face of a rapidly changing world, these travel trends offer a beacon of hope and a reminder of the unifying power of tourism. The United States, with its diverse landscapes and rich cultural tapestry, continues to captivate and welcome visitors from every corner of the globe, reinforcing its position as a premier global destination.
