ICCA LogoBangkok has emerged as a global frontrunner in sustainable conference practices, as evidenced by the recent International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) Congress 2023. This landmark event, held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center from November 12-15, has not only set a new standard for sustainability in the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferencing, Exhibitions) industry but has also paved the way for future international gatherings.

With a record-breaking attendance of 1,123 delegates from 80 countries, ICCA Congress 2023 in Bangkok was not just the largest congress in the Asia Pacific region but also the third largest globally. Under the leadership of Mr. Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, President of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), the congress showcased an ambitious and practical approach to sustainability.

A key initiative was the sustainable food sourcing and management practices, setting a benchmark for the future. The Bangkok Pledge on Gastronomy Sustainability, a significant legacy of this congress, is scheduled for launch at ICCA Congress 2024 in Abu Dhabi. This pledge is a testament to Thailand’s commitment to measurable sustainability and serves as a strategic driver for the MICE industry.

Furthermore, the congress achieved a remarkable reduction of 505 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent through its domestic activities, underscoring its commitment to environmental stewardship. This achievement resonates deeply with TCEB’s vision, as Mr Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya emphasized, “TCEB is honoured to share an ambitious goal with ICCA in the area of sustainability, and we can deliver it in practical and measurable terms as demonstrated by our food sourcing and food waste management.”

The Bangkok Pledge on Gastronomy Sustainability is not just a commitment on paper but a concrete step towards a more sustainable future for international conferences. It’s a clear indication that Thailand is not only leading by example but is also inspiring global change in the MICE industry.

As the world looks towards sustainable practices in every industry, the success of the ICCA Congress 2023 in Bangkok stands as a beacon of hope and a model for future events worldwide. It’s a demonstration of how concerted efforts in sustainability can yield significant results, influencing global trends and setting new standards for the industry.

In conclusion, the ICCA Congress 2023 in Bangkok marks a turning point in the global pursuit of sustainable conferencing. It’s a shining example of how environmental responsibility and industry leadership can coexist, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future in the MICE industry and beyond.
