New era - An Etihad A350 takes off for New Delhi, the first ever commercial flight from Abu Dhabi Terminal A, October 31, 2023As Etihad Airways commemorates its 20th anniversary, it embarks on a transformative era with the launch of ‘Journey 2030’ – a strategic vision to guide the airline towards sustainable, profitable growth. Unveiled at the prestigious Dubai Airshow, this ambitious plan underscores a new chapter in Etihad’s narrative, promising an exciting future for passengers, the aviation industry, and the UAE’s capital.

Etihad’s CEO, Antonoaldo Neves, in a stirring keynote at the airshow, articulated the airline’s forward-looking strategy. “Journey 2030 marks a significant phase in Etihad’s evolution,” Neves said. “As we celebrate two decades of excellence, our focus now pivots to a future where sustainable growth and exceptional customer service are paramount.”

Etihad achieved a remarkable milestone this year, carrying 13 million passengers, a substantial 30% increase from the previous year. Under the banner of Journey 2030, Etihad aims to return to its 2017 peak passenger numbers by late next year, with an ambitious target of 33 million passengers by the end of the decade.

Journey 2030 is not merely about numbers; it’s a comprehensive strategy to enhance Etihad’s global connectivity. The plan envisions expanding the airline’s network to over 125 destinations, effectively leveraging its strategic position between Asia and Europe. This network expansion will be supported by a fleet set to double, focusing on connecting key regions such as the GCC, India, and Asia with major destinations in Europe and North America. New destinations, increased flight frequencies, and more travel options form the core of Etihad’s renewed network strategy.

“Our mission is unambiguous,” Neves stated. “We aim to deliver unparalleled customer service and sustainable profitability, laying the foundation for Etihad’s contribution to Abu Dhabi’s broader aspirations.”

Journey 2030 is poised to impact Abu Dhabi’s economy substantially. The airline’s expansion plans are tailored to attract 10 million point-to-point travellers to Abu Dhabi by 2030, stimulating economic growth, creating job opportunities, and reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading global travel hub.

Neves highlighted the opening of the new Terminal A at Abu Dhabi’s airport as a catalyst for this growth. “The new terminal provides the necessary capacity and quality to meet our guests’ expectations and support our expansion plans,” he added.

2023 has already been a year of achievements for Etihad, with 12 new destinations and imminent routes to India, Boston, and Nairobi. The airline has also bolstered its presence in key markets, adding flights and enhancing connectivity. Furthermore, introducing 16 new aircraft to its fleet underscores Etihad’s commitment to modernization and efficiency.

Reflecting on the airline’s journey, Neves remarked, “Twenty years ago, the leaders of the UAE envisioned an extraordinary airline. Today, we stand on the threshold of a new era. Journey 2030 is not just a growth strategy; it’s a commitment to delight our customers, empower our staff, and contribute to our nation’s prosperity.”

As Etihad Airways soars into its third decade, Journey 2030 represents more than a plan; it symbolizes a renewed promise to its passengers, employees, and the nation – a promise to redefine the future of travel.
