In a groundbreaking decision, Air New Zealand has magnanimously extended the expiry of COVID-19-related credits by two more years. Initially set to terminate on January 31, 2024, customers will now have until January 31, 2026, to utilize these credits, affirming the airline’s dedication to customer needs during these uncertain times.

Chief Financial Officer Richard Thomson explained that this decision materialized in response to the notable volume of outstanding credits and invaluable customer feedback. By January 2026, credits hailing from as early as 2020 will enjoy a six-year validity window, a monumental gesture in the aviation industry.

“In our mission to support and engage with our esteemed patrons, we have leveraged multiple channels. From direct emails and phone calls to liaising with travel agencies and national media advertising, we’ve ensured no stone remains unturned,” Thomson elaborated.

While the airline has made significant strides, achieving an 85% utilization rate for COVID credits, a whopping $200 million in value remains untapped. “The pandemic has presented unparalleled challenges. This extension is our pledge to ensure every customer gets the time and flexibility they deserve,” Thomson remarked.

Designed to accommodate travellers who had procured non-refundable tickets for pandemic-affected flights, these credits have become a testament to the airline’s unwavering integrity. Those who opted for refundable tickets and sought reimbursement have already been accommodated, further solidifying the airline’s commitment.

Highlighting the unprecedented nature of this gesture, Thomson shared that this marks the sixth instance of extending COVID-19 credit validity. The global reach of Air New Zealand’s clientele and the intricacies of maintaining updated contact information have augmented the necessity of such a decision.

Moreover, Air New Zealand’s policies have been tailored with paramount flexibility. The choices are vast, from utilizing credits across any segment of their expansive network to combining credits with cash for bookings or even fare upgrades. “Our dedication to serving our customers remains unparalleled. We urge all credit holders to reach out and secure their bookings soon,” emphasized Thomson.

While this magnanimous extension applies exclusively to credits issued before October 2022, other credits adhering to standard terms will maintain their original 12-month validity or as legally mandated.

Air New Zealand is expeditiously updating its online platforms to reflect these changes. They’ve assured customers that any discrepancies in credit expiry dates on their accounts won’t impede their booking processes.
