Aotearoa, New Zealand, is a world-famous tourist destination and a storyteller’s dreamscape. Amidst a chock-full filming schedule for HBO Max’s Our Flag Means Death Season 2, Waititi, New Zealand’s luminary director and actor, collaborates with Tourism New Zealand for a fresh visual narrative. The film, brilliantly titled ‘No Place Like It On Earth’, holds a mischievous twist. With Waititi engrossed in his series, his real-life stunt double, Jade Daniels, steps in to explore the enchanting vistas of the nation. Helmed by director Jackie van Beek, this film juxtaposes New Zealand’s quintessential experiences with captivating shots that might hint at doppelganger mischief.

The immersive narrative spans whitewater rafting in Rotorua, aerial views over Mount Tarawera, the aquatic splendours of Kaikōura, and the viticulture wonders in Auckland. Waititi encapsulates the essence of the land with his poignant reflection, “In New Zealand, morning surf sessions seamlessly transition into evening ski adventures – a feat unparalleled globally. Its diverse offerings are unparalleled.

The film boasts locales that serve as film sets for Our Flag Means Death Season 2, such as the pristine Bethell’s Beach, enigmatic Piha Beach, and the majestic Bay of Islands. Waititi’s affinity for the nation’s coastline, especially the brooding allure of Piha, adds an intimate layer to the narrative.

While Taika’s name garners international acclaim, this alliance profoundly benefits New Zealand. “The collaboration with Taika – a global Kiwi icon, underpins a canny approach, showcasing Aotearoa’s enchanting offerings despite his bustling commitments,” says René de Monchy, Tourism New Zealand’s astute Chief Executive.

However, beyond Our Flag Means Death, New Zealand’s expansive landscapes have long held a magnetic appeal for international filmmakers. David Jenkins, the creator of the series, exclaims, “Visiting New Zealand, one envisions fantastical landscapes, only to be stupefied by its tangible grandeur.

For aficionados eager to witness New Zealand through a cinematic lens, Our Flag Means Death Season 2 premieres on 5 October 2023 via HBO Max. Meanwhile, the tourism promotional film is ready to enthral audiences at New Zealand’s official tourism site.
