In a remarkable comeback for the travel industry, July 2023 witnessed a staggering 17% surge in U.S. international air passenger enplanements, as revealed by recent National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) data. This surge underscores the industry’s resilience and paints an encouraging picture of the world reclaiming its wanderlust after a prolonged pandemic-induced slumber.
Air Passenger Enplanements Up 17% Year Over Year in July 2023
The numbers speak volumes: an impressive 24.729 million air passenger enplanements were recorded in July 2023, marking a remarkable 16.8% surge compared to the same month in the previous year. To put this into perspective, these enplanements reached a staggering 97.8% of the pre-pandemic July 2019 volume, indicative of a strong rebound.
Air Passenger Travel Between the United States and Europe Up 12% in July 2023
One of the most remarkable highlights of this resurgence was the surge in air passenger travel between the United States and Europe. July 2023 witnessed an impressive 12% increase in travel volume compared to the same month in 2022. While this growth is certainly noteworthy, it’s worth noting that it still lags by only (-6.1%) in comparison to the robust July 2019 statistics.
A Global Resurgence
Delving into the specifics, the data showcased that non-U.S. citizen air passenger arrivals to the United States from foreign countries registered a whopping 19.4% increase in July 2023 compared to the previous year. Impressively, this surge accounted for 83.6% of the pre-pandemic July 2019 volume, affirming the enduring appeal of the United States as a travel destination.
Not to be outshone, overseas visitor arrivals continued to mark their triumphant return for the twenty-first consecutive month, clocking in at an impressive 3.138 million in July 2023. Surpassing the 1.0 million mark yet again, these arrivals reached 78.4% of the July 2019 pre-pandemic volume, up from 73.2% just a month before.
Destinations and Departures
Among the prominent air travel corridors, Mexico, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Dominican Republic, and Germany led the way with the highest air passenger travel volume. An intriguing highlight was the resurgence of international, regional air travel between the United States and various parts of the world. Notably, Europe saw a robust 11.8% growth in air travel over July 2022, despite being slightly (-6.1%) lower than the pre-pandemic July 2019 figures.
South/Central America/Caribbean regions experienced a healthy 15.9% growth over July 2022 and a remarkable 8.5% surge compared to July 2019. Meanwhile, Asia’s air travel surged by a remarkable 79.3% over July 2022, although it still lagged by (32.8%) in comparison to July 2019.
Ports of Arrival and Departure
New York (JFK), Los Angeles (LAX), and Miami (MIA) secured their positions as the top U.S. ports serving international locations. On the international side, London Heathrow (LHR), Cancun (CUN), and Toronto (YYZ) were the leading foreign ports serving U.S. destinations.
In a world seemingly reawakening from its travel hiatus, these statistics are a testament to global air travel’s resilience and enduring allure. The journey to recovery is far from over, but as the skies again fill with travellers’ dreams, it’s evident that the travel industry is soaring toward brighter days.
