Fukuoka has some elegant hotels to spend time, relax and enjoy lunch, Japanese or Western, or as we did afternoon tea. A city rich in history and tradition, Fukuoka is fast becoming a major international convention centre and a gateway to Asia. When looking for a centrally located hotel with first-class accommodations and a full range of facilities, Hotel New Otani Hakata is often Fukuoka’s premier choice.

The Royal Family of Japan has relied on the Hotel New Otani Hakata for their hotel needs while staying in Fukuoka for many years. You will find the same unique blend of gracious Japanese hospitality and international standards that have become the hallmark of New Otani hotels worldwide.

It is a restful and elegant hotel. We walked into the lobby to a selection of paintings that visitors were having pictures taken. This hotel offers typical and welcoming efficiency and friendliness. Calmness and tranquillity give a break from our hectic tour of this fascinating city of Fukuoka.

The bright interior is an open space with paintings on display. You can enjoy seasonally elaborate cuisine.

Three paintings by French painter Paul Guirmann are displayed in the bright interior facing the public square. In addition to teatime, the early summer afternoon tea set is “Matcha”. They have prepared green tea sweets such as shortcakes, macarons, brown rice cakes, and the chef’s special savoury.

We are escorted to a private room for afternoon tea. This will include a taste of the special strawberry – amaou. This is a very special Japanese strawberry grown in the Fukuoka prefecture. It has the best attributes of this fruit. It’s the “king of Japanese strawberries.” Of course, all the items on the afternoon tea tray are carefully prepared sweet and savoury treats that go well with fine tea.

The restaurant has a beautiful Spanish-style interior. The word “Castellian” comes from the Kingdom of Castile. It is a kingdom located in the central part of the Iberian Peninsula in medieval Europe and originated from the later Kingdom of Spain.

This is a beautiful restaurant with the warmth of bricks and a Spanish-style interior with white walls. Four private rooms, named after 1400s Spanish dynasty monarchs, allow you to dine in the atmosphere of a banquet in a castle.

Hotel New Otani Hakata provides elegant accommodations with six restaurants and a Japanese tearoom. Senbazuru restaurant serves seasonal delicate Japanese dishes, and Taikan-en offers lavish Chinese cuisine. Delicious cocktails are on offer at The Castillian Room bar.

The lively Tenjin area is just a 3-minute subway ride away. Free Wi-Fi is provided in the rooms and the lobby. Each spacious room has facilities like a flat-screen TV with video-on-demand programmes and a fridge. The en suite bathroom includes a hairdryer, a bathtub, and complimentary toiletries. Wi-Fi and wired internet are available free of charge. Guests at New Otani Hakata Hotel can receive relaxing massages at an extra cost or rent bicycles to explore the city.

Following the tea, we took a tour of this elegant hotel. Leading to another look at the paintings by French painter Paul Guirmann, we bought a beautiful strawberry (amaou) pastry to take with us—an enjoyable visit to this hotel with gracious Japanese hospitality.
