Canada in winter - Alberta - credit Destination CanadaDestination Canada’s Focus Canada media lunch last Friday at Luke’s Kitchen, Kimpton Margot Sydney, has been hailed as a resounding success.

Travel writers enjoyed an immersive experience, celebrating Canadian destinations and adventures.

Keynote speaker Alysa McCall, TED alumna and Director of Conservation Outreach/Staff Scientist, Polar Bears International, was sponsored by Adventure World. Her address on polar bear Conservation was inspiring, straightforward, and honest. She pulled no punches about the challenges the great white bears face, stressing the vital need to press governments to combat climate change. At the same time, she pointed out that personal experiences with wildlife help engender a strong conservation mindset. There is nothing like seeing polar bears in the wild. McCall’s expertise and knowledge of these majestic creatures in the Canadian Arctic are genuinely inspiring.

Adventure World has sent Australian travellers to Churchill, Manitoba, in the far northern reaches of Canada, for over 30 years to experience this unique arctic environment. October and November offer prime polar bear viewing as the bears congregate on the Hudson Bay shoreline to wait for the ice to form. Polar bears are also active during the summer months, from July to September.

The northern lights are another critical drawcard of the region, best viewed late Jan through April and late August and September. From July to August, the friendly beluga whales visit the Churchill River in droves, delighting visitors with their ‘canary’ chirps.
