With NSW coming off second best in the NRL State of Origin battle, another state-against-state battle is set to be staged in the heart of Outback NSW when Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash revellers attempt to Nutbush their way into a new world record – claiming the title from sister event the Queensland based Birdsville Big Red Bash.

“It would be great to see NSW take home the Nutbush world title for the very first time when the Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash event is staged next month, “said Greg Donovan, Festival owner and Managing Director of the Outback Music Festival Group.

Last year at our inaugural Mundi Mundi Bash events Queensland were able to retain the title – but this year we feel that NSW and the Mundi Mundi Bash are really going to have a great crack at not only beating the Queensland set record, but potentially smashing it.  We’re loving watching the Nutbush figures skyrocket – this year at the Big Red Bash we went from a record of 4,084 in 2022 to the new current record of 5,838.  And for the Mundi Mundi Bash we’re anticipating the biggest ever crowd of 12,000 that we’ve ever had at a Bash event, and we have a bigger site and 7,000 tickets ready to sell – so there’s a very good chance a brand-new record will be set in NSW.”

While state bragging rights are hotly contested, the real winners of the Nutbush world record attempts are the Royal Flying Doctors who are the recipients of all money raised from the Nutbush world record attempts – with more than $600,000 raised collectively by the Bash events for the Royal Flying Doctors since 2016.

“At the Big Red Bash, we were able to give Tina Turner Australia’s biggest tribute to date with the Nutbush, and now we hope to better that again,” added Greg Donovan.

In August 2022 3,720 Mundi Mundi Bash festival-goers danced across the sprawling desert plains to the 1973 Tina Turner soul classic, with this year marking the 50th anniversary of the soul classic, as well as the passing of the late rock n roll queen.

“We’re excited that both our events have provided simply the best tribute to the legendary Tina Turner! It was amazing to see 5,838 enthusiastic revellers come together to set a world record for the largest Nutbush City Limits Dance at the Big Red Bash – and we hope we’re on the brink of doing something even bigger than that at the Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash.  We’ve created such a great iconic tradition, I’m sure that Tina would be proud that the Nutbush has helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Royal Flying Doctors, and that this legacy will live on,” said Steve Donovan, Operations Manager for the Outback Music Festival Group who stage the Birdsville Big Red Bash and Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash.

The Nutbush world record attempts at both Bash events are adjudicated by The Australian Book of Records.

Following the Nutbush world record attempt at the Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash, Kate Ceberano, Wendy Matthews, Grace Knight, Melanie Dyer, Caitlyn Shadbolt, Miranda Carey and Robyn Loau will also take to the stage to deliver electrifying performances of Tina Turner’s greatest hits, including “River Deep”, “Simply the Best” and “Proud Mary in a special tribute to the legendary performer’s extraordinary career.
