Botswana Okavango DeltaIn an unexpected twist, the Okavango Delta in Botswana has made a surprise late surge, contradicting previous predictions of below-average flood levels for this season. This surge has opened up thrilling prospects for visitors to the Duba Plains Camp, the Duba Explorers, and the recently revamped Okavango Explorers Camp.

Late or medium floods are an essential part of the Okavango ecosystem. They provide unique opportunities, such as allowing us to reach islands that become isolated during periods of high water. Additionally, the slower rush of water offers other advantages.

One of the thrilling updates following this water surge is the reintroduction of the traditional mekoro (canoes) at Duba Plains, offering visitors a chance to glide on the calm, shallow waters of the Delta. This mekoro experience is also anticipated at the Okavango Explorers Camp, thanks to the consistent water flow from the Selinda Spillway.

However, the most exciting news emerging from the Okavango Delta is the official launch of the ‘water camp’ Sitatunga Private Island in three days’ time. This momentous event follows nearly three years of meticulous design, planning, and ten months of construction.

Sitatunga’s creation was a herculean task, meticulously overseen by Sharon and Pete Unwin under the watchful eyes of Managing Director Daphne Kadiwa. Six Goirwang, an experienced camp manager from Selinda, has been entrusted with steering Sitatunga into the future.

Sitatunga symbolises community involvement and empowerment, with over 90% of its staff drawn from the local populace. From seasoned chefs to knowledgeable guides, the camp is all set to deliver an unrivalled guest experience.

Sitatunga Private Island is more than just a luxury camp; it embodies the commitment to sustainability and community enrichment. It thrives in harmony with the rhythms of the Okavango and its extraordinary yearly flood cycles.

It’s a new chapter in the Okavango Delta’s tale – shaped by water’s powerful surge, the revival of traditional practices, and the inception of a model camp that seamlessly marries sustainability with luxury. The grand opening of Sitatunga Private Island promises a fresh beginning in the heart of Botswana’s untouched wilderness.

This year, the Okavango Delta’s late surge is a poignant reminder of nature’s unpredictability and resilience, which continually provides unique opportunities to connect with the wild, engage in sustainable practices, and enrich local communities.

Sitatunga Private Island is ready to welcome visitors to the renewed magic of the Okavango Delta. It’s time to step into the mekoro, discover the untamed beauty of Botswana, and experience the harmonious blend of luxury and sustainability at Sitatunga Private Island.
