Arguably one of the biggest music events that Memphians are most proud of is drawing near. From a string of activity-packed events to an impressive lineup of concerts by special guests, Elvis Week will take place between 9-17 August to commemorate the remarkable life and lasting influence of the late King of Rock’n’Roll.
Those who are unable to attend the celebrations on-site in Memphis will be able to tune in to Virtual Elvis Week, meaning Australians can enjoy the celebrations from the comfort of their own homes.
For the 46th anniversary of Elvis’ passing, Graceland is planning a huge festival that includes honouring the anniversaries of two of Elvis’ landmark television specials: the 55th Anniversary of the ‘68 Special Comeback Special and the 50th Anniversary of the Aloha from Hawaii Concert, both of which will take place at the Graceland Soundstage and feature a live band, special guests, and Elvis on the big screen.
The week-long celebration kicks off on the 9th of August with a stage concert at the Graceland Soundstage hosted by past winners of the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Competition. Hailing from all corners of the Earth (including Australia), Elvis impersonators will perform the most iconic hits by Elvis giving event-goers the perfect opportunity to capture the true essence of the legendary music icon.
Graceland Tours: Explore the charming town that nurtured the early dreams of the King of Rock’n’Roll that shaped this iconic figure. The Graceland Excursions and Stable Tours is a must-see attraction guiding both Elvis fans and first-time Memphis visitors revealing the beauty of Elvis’ estate. Spanning 200,000 square feet the mansion features museums, an entertainment complex, restaurants and gift shops that unveil his most personal moments. It is a remarkable opportunity to not only explore the untold stories of his legacy but also to be guided around the town.
The ‘68 Comeback Special: In celebration of the 55th Anniversary of the 1968 ‘The Comeback Special’, the enhanced screening event will take you back to relive the magic of the iconic NBC television special. Accompanied by specific guests who were present during the occasion, guests will be able to embrace the 60s spirit by wearing their favourite retro attire and dancing alongside Elvis to be part of one of his most significant career milestones.
Aloha from Hawaii Concert: Another highlight of this year’s festival is the 50th anniversary of Elvis’ groundbreaking Aloha from Hawaii Via Satellite concert, which was performed at the Honolulu International Centre in January 1973 and was the first entertainment special by a solo artist to be broadcast live around the world. It is estimated that between 1 and 1.5 billion viewers watched the concert. The concert during Elvis Week will be featuring the singer on the big screen, featuring vocals by the king himself and backed by a live band.
Conversation on Elvis: For a nostalgic journey, guests can listing to Elvis’ friends, co-stars, musicians and others sharing their favourite Elvis memories and stories. The stage will feature guests including Linda Thompson, Jay Osmond, Allan Blye, esteemed member of the Wrecking Crew, Mike Feasy and more.
Candlelight Vigil: On the evening of the 15th of August, Graceland’s front gate will become a gathering place for thousands of fans from across the globe. As the tribute to his enduring legacy is paid, candles will gently be carried to symbolise the remarkable life of Elvis. This event will go throughout the night and will be streamed live online for those who aren’t in Memphis.
