It’s Freedom Time and ocean freedom is a priority for Cora Cora Maldives this World Oceans Day. The ocean covers over 70% of the Earth’s surface and Cora Cora Maldives addresses today’s major ocean threats through a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach using creativity and with eco-innovation at its core.

Revolutionary Plastic Use Reduction

Did you know there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean? According to National Geographic, 269,000 tonnes float to the surface whilst four billion plastic microfibres per square kilometre are in the deep sea. Swapping plastic cups and straws for paper ones is considered the norm nowadays, whereas Cora Cora Maldives takes limiting plastic use to a whole new level.

The resort uses Zero Waste Shampoo, Conditioner, and Body Wash for a completely plastic-free shower experience and has banned the import of branded bottled water and instead, filters, mineralises, and bottles their own water without using plastic. Through their existing partnership with Starboard, Cora Cora Maldives use windsurfing and paddleboarding equipment that contains recycled and biodegradable materials.

Chlorine Control

Chlorine can have a devastating effect on fish as it can damage their skin and gills through chemical burns. Cora Cora Maldives is situated in one of the most glorious environments in the world – the pristine Raa Atoll, so eradicating the risk of chlorine damage on the local marine life that fills the balmy waters around the island was at the top of the environmental conservation agenda. The innovative resort initiated a project using ground-breaking technology to eliminate chlorine usage in the swimming pools by installing ENVIROSWIM systems in each pool. This water purification system has little to no environmental impact and creates safe and refreshing water in which guests can swim, bob, or glide.

Life-Saving Partnerships

Cora Cora Maldives has established a partnership with Parley for the Ocean to reduce its plastic footprint, boost recycling, and support the creation of new methods and materials, all designed to limit global waste. As part of this scheme, plastic waste is intercepted, repurposed, and upcycled to create Ocean PlasticÒ, a range of premium eco-innovative materials that transform products into symbols of change. Using these incredible materials raises global awareness of the damage of plastic but is also a source of inspiration on what we can achieve working collaboratively to create materials that are kind to the planet. The scheme has the bonus of funding the Parley AIR Strategy.

New for this year’s World Oceans Day, Cora Cora Maldives are the sole and official sponsor of CORA, an Olive Ridley Turtle they saved at the resort. After losing both front flippers to a ghost net, the Cora Cora team treated the turtle resulting in the successful rescue and rehabilitation of CORA and continue to financially support his recovery. The resort has also signed up with the Olive Ridley Project to create a long-term partnership. This year, the collaboration will encourage guests to get involved with conservation projects through Reef Cleaning and Ghost Gear Bracelet workshops where guests can upcycle ghost nets into stylish accessories – the perfectly sustainable souvenir from an unforgettable adventure.

Cora Cora Maldives will continue to support the Atoll Marine Centre through donations for turtle rehabilitation projects. This World Ocean Day, the five-star resort celebrates the centre’s incredible success and is looking forward to seeing how they can continue to work together to create and implement more innovative projects to protect the destination’s spectacular marine ecosystem.
