Washington Monument SunsetThe United States experienced a significant boost in international travel in January 2023, with data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) showing a total non-U.S. resident international visitor volume of 4,795,951, representing an increase of 93.1% compared to January 2022. This surge in arrivals also indicates a significant rebound in the tourism industry after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The report further shows that the overseas visitor volume to the United States increased by 91.1% from January 2022, while Canadian visitation was 15% above January 2019 visitation. The most significant number of international visitor arrivals was from Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, South Korea, and Brazil, accounting for 69.8% of total international arrivals.

The January 2023 numbers mark the twenty-second consecutive month that total non-U.S. resident international arrivals to the United States have increased year-over-year (YOY). However, among the top 20 tourist-generating countries, Colombia was the only country that reported a decrease in visitor volume in January 2023 compared to January 2022, with a -3.5% change.

Meanwhile, U.S. citizens’ outbound travel departures from the United States totalled 6,393,603 in January 2023, representing an increase of 60% compared to January 2022. This marks the twenty-second consecutive month that total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States have increased YOY. Regarding market share, North America (Mexico and Canada) represented 54.1% of January 2023 departures, while overseas represented 45.9%.

Mexico recorded an enormous outbound visitor volume of 2,979,422, representing 46.6% of total departures for January. Canada recorded a year-over-year increase of 255.2%. Mexico and the Caribbean accounted for 59.1% of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures in January, up 3.2 percentage points from December 2022.

The Caribbean was the second-largest market for outbound U.S. visitors during the month of January, with 798,441 departures, up 58.3% since January 2022. This is the first month since March 2022 that U.S. outbound visitor volume to the Caribbean outpaced that to Europe. January outbound visitation to Europe totalled 797,541, up 117.7% compared to January 2022.

The increase in international travel to and from the United States in January 2023 is a positive sign for the tourism industry as it recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. The NTTO report provides valuable insights into the industry’s current state and can help inform policies to promote tourism and support the industry’s growth in the coming months.
