Australia’s most popular cruise line, P&O Cruises, has marked its 90th anniversary in style, with a special event held in Queensland to kick off its national Thank You tour. The event, attended by over 90 guests, including crew, suppliers, and past and present cruisers, was held on board the magnificent Pacific Encounter and celebrated almost a century of pioneering the perfect Aussie holiday.

In a nod to the past nine decades, crew members thrilled guests with a colourful streamer-throwing ceremony, while cruisers shared beautiful stories of their travels onboard over the years. The event also featured local produce and entertainment, including a performance by Jahmarley Dawson, a world-renowned didgeridoo player, who played an indigenous version of “Happy Birthday” for P&O Cruises.

The festivities continued with the ship’s captain cutting a 90cm tall cake and pouring an impressive 90-glass champagne tower. The event also highlighted P&O Cruises’ significant contribution to Queensland’s economy, with more than 118 ship visits planned across the state in 2022/23, providing over $500 million directly and indirectly to the state’s economy.

Thank You tour in Queensland

Carnival Australia and P&O Cruises President Marguerite Fitzgerald emphasized the significance of launching the Thank You tour in Queensland, which holds almost 40% of P&O’s market. She noted that guests love cruising in Queensland, and the company loves cruising there, with over 1.5 million guests have experienced the state’s wonders in the past decade.

Ms Fitzgerald added, “There is no better place on earth to experience cruising than on board a P&O cruise in the sunshine state. From the Great Barrier Reef to Tangalooma and across the islands of the Pacific, we visit communities up and down the coast and make many holiday dreams come true.”

The 90th-anniversary celebrations will continue in Fremantle, followed by Sydney and Melbourne. Ms Fitzgerald highlighted the recent upgrades to the Pacific Encounter, which include twin racer waterslides, an Edge experience, and brilliant food and beverage offerings. She said that P&O Cruises couldn’t wait to continue the festivities on board across Australia.

The event was a fitting celebration of P&O Cruises‘ 90-year history, during which the company has become an iconic brand synonymous with the perfect Aussie holiday. As the company continues to pioneer new destinations and experiences, its contributions to Australia’s tourism industry are set to grow even further.
