Spread the love

PONANT’s Le Commandant Charcot is offering its guests a unique opportunity to live a whole new experience, with a two-day-one-night Nordic skiing polar trek in Greenland. Two full immersion expeditions are now on sale for spring 2023 with only a 10-people capacity.

When the northern spring lights up Greenland’s East coast, the world’s only luxury icebreaker, Le Commandant Charcot will be alone in approaching these icy shores, still largely inaccessible to conventional ships. Among the guests discovering the hypnotic magic of the Ammassalik and Blosseville regions, a small group will have the privilege of leaving the cosy ambiance of the ship to explore this remote wilderness and be completely self-reliant.

Total immersion in polar nature

For two days and one night, a small group of 10 guests will share the experience of trekking in Greenland as the Inuits have done since time immemorial. Equipped with Nordic skis and sleds – also called pulkas, loaded with equipment and food, they will complete a loop of about 15km. During the polar spring, the day lingers as the midnight sun never sets, and the temperatures fluctuate between 0 and -10°C.

Accompanied by three English-speaking Greenlandic guides the explorers will bivouac under tents in the snowy vastness, in keeping with the Inuit tradition. The concept of time and space becomes lost when one is surrounded by a majestic wilderness where nature reigns supreme. Sensations are heightened ten-fold; everyone feeling small yet totally connected to nature and their private emotions.

An exclusive adventure available to book now.

Anyone wishing to participate in this polar trek needs to have some experience of winter sports like skiing, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing and be fit enough to trek 10 to 15km a day. The itinerary involves around seven hours of hiking on Nordic skis each day, with frequent breaks (8km maximum), and an elevation gain of 300 to 500m. Being in good physical and mental conditions and having a sense of adventure are essential.

For this first time, the polar trek will be offered to just 10 guests on two sailings in 2023 and are dependent on weather and ice conditions. Three expeditions are also scheduled for 2024.
