Ayers Rock – Uluru
The light and sound show at Ayers Rock Resort, Australia, combines ancient indigenous storytelling with modern technology to create a unique immersive experience for visitors. This show, which will launch in May, is the first of its kind and promises to be a breathtaking spectacle.
Wintjiri Wiru is a new light, laser, projection and drone show to be performed regularly at Ayers Rock Resort in Australia. This show, which means “beautiful view out to the horizon” in the local Anangu language, is a first of its kind in the world. The Anangu people have one of the world’s oldest continuous cultures and have been custodians of this land and its stories since time immemorial. The show will bring to life a chapter of the Mala ancestral story and has been developed with the close collaboration and approval of the Anangu custodians of the story.
Wintjiri Wiru is a show that combines light, projections, lasers and drones to create an immersive experience in the presence of Uluru in Australia’s Central Desert. The show is designed and produced by RAMUS, a world-renowned media architecture studio. The story is brought to life with the help of over 1,000 luminous drones that create a breathtaking aerial display accompanied by a narration in the Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara languages, and a traditional soundtrack recorded with local Anangu community members. The Wintjiri Wiru show will offer an expansive experience of light and sound, illuminating the Central Desert and connecting the earth and sky.
The Wintjiri Wiru light and sound show at Ayers Rock Resort is a collaborative effort between Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia, the Anangu consultation group, and RAMUS. The Anangu consultation group has been involved in every aspect of the show, including naming the experience, advising on the visuals, narrating the story in multiple languages, and delivering the music. The show will be viewed on a sustainably-built platform with panoramic views of Uluru and Kata Tjuta and will feature artwork from local Anangu artist, Christine Brumby. The CEO of Voyages, Matthew Cameron-Smith, has expressed his honour in being able to share the cultural importance of the Mala story with guests and has stated that the Anangu consultation group has carefully guided the Wintjiri Wiru experience.
This quote is from Matthew Cameron-Smith, the CEO of Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia, expressing his excitement about working with RAMUS on the Wintjiri Wiru light, laser, projection, and drone experience. He believes that the technology and artistry combined with the traditional Anangu music and storytelling will create a shared and memorable experience that will deepen visitors’ spiritual connection with the land. The Wintjiri Wiru experience aims to bring the ancient Mala story to life in the heart of Australia and honour the Anangu community’s cultural heritage.
The Wintjiri Wiru experience will consist of two sound and light shows each night, from March to December, with one show per night in January and February. The main event is the three-hour Wintjiri Wiru Sunset Dinner, which includes welcome cocktails, canapes, a gourmet dinner hamper, return resort transfers, and the sound and light show. The dinner experience is priced at AUD$385 per person. The shorter, one-hour-long show called “After Dark” includes light refreshments followed by the show and is priced at AUD$190 per person.
The Mala story is a significant Tjukurpa (Indigenous philosophy) for the Anangu people that links them to the environment and their ancestors. The story contains lessons about survival in the desert, appropriate behaviour, the origins and structure of the universe, and the place of all elements in it. Through the Wintjiri Wiru sound and light show, Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia is sharing this story with visitors in a respectful manner, with the help of the Anangu consultation group.
The three-hour Wintjiri Wiru Sunset Dinner or the one-hour After Dark show is a way to celebrate Anangu culture and connect with this special part of Australia. Voyages acknowledge Anangu’s connection to the land, water, sky, culture, and community and pay respect to the Anangu communities and Elders. Booking for the show can be made through Voyages’ new trade booking portal, Tjuta, at trade.voyages.com.au.
