“The fastest growing airline in the world”.
Bamboo Airways is making its mark on the world aviation industry delivering an experience above and beyond expectation.
The Vietnam-based Bamboo Airways lifted off on 16 January 2019 with a leased A321 aircraft flight between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi’s capital. Since then, the airline has built up a fleet of 29 aircraft with an average age of seven years, including three of the flagships 787-9 Dreamliners, with 11 more 787s on order. As a newish player in the cutthroat hurly-burly that is the airline industry, Bamboo Airways has become the fastest growing airline in the world.
Bamboo Airways has a strategy to be all things to all people appealing to the budget fare economy passengers, the bigger seat, and more leg room premium economy alternative and then the ultimate business class with 36 of the Collins Aerospace Super Diamond seats in a 1-2-1 layout, flat beds, and state-of-the-art personal comfort technology.
Business Class guests enjoy access to the Plaza Premium Lounge in Sydney, close to gates 25 and 26. At Tan Son Nhat airport In Ho Chi Minh City, it’s Le Saigonnais Lounge with stairs near gates sign 18-20 leading up to level three. About AUD 58 will get you access for three hours if you don’t have a pass. The food offering is varied and abundant in both lounges – curries, fried pork and rice and the spirits on offer were vodkas, rum, and whisky, but no gin or tonic in the Le Saigonnais Lounge.
It was a seamless check-in for business class passengers at Sydney Airport, where the airline engaged a third party to undertake all the airport check-in duties. The luggage allowance in business class is 14kg carry-on (including two hand baggage items and one accessory), and 65kg checked luggage.
On board the 787 Dreamliner, the cabin crew were welcoming and friendly and keen to gain your appreciation of their efforts. As English is not their first language, It is wise to ensure that your request for food, drink or information is correctly understood and fulfilled. The cabin crew are neatly and fashionably attired and go about their business in a highly professional manner.
During the welcome service and safety announcement, all the staff stand at the front of the cabins with their hands over their hearts. Teddy, the senior flight attendant, explained it is an expression of welcome from the heart, “It is the signature welcome of the airline,” he said. “More than just a flight” and “the Airline of hospitality” are two more true themes.
In-plane announcements are made in Vietnamese and English, with the English pre-recorded announcement spoken with a very English accent. When embarking and disembarking, a melodic Bamboo Airways theme song is sung by a young female Vietnamese singer who is an acquaintance of one of the executives. Business class passengers receive a handy toiletry bag with masks, toothbrushes, body lotion, and other luxury giveaway items. All crockery, glassware etc are well branded with the Bamboo logo. During the eight-hour flights, business class was treated to two three-course meals, each with three options for the main. Menus were displayed on a tablet device, Grilled beef fillet, braised fish with rice and lemongrass or chicken, mushrooms, and rice.
About an hour from our destination, another three-course meal. I opted for the meaty steak pie, mashed potatoes as a main and noodles with prawns and fish as an entrée. Sweets comprised fresh fruit and cheeses followed by coffee and tea. Soft drinks, beer, or a variety of Tyrell’s brand white and red wines were on offer. No spirits.
The airline is not yet well known in Australia. Still, the verdict of a check with passengers in premium economy and economy agree the airline is “a breath of fresh air” and has a definite competitive product and an excellent future.
In March, Bamboo Airways launched a twice-weekly Sydney to Ho Chi Minh City service, which is intended to expand to four weekly by the end of 2022.
Bamboo Airways operates two return flights per week SYD-SGN, two weekly MEL-SGN, and one return flight a week MEL-HAN. Bamboo Airways is the only airline to serve a nonstop regular MEL-HAN route. The aircraft deployed on all these routes is the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The frequency will be increased in the future depending on market demands.
In addition, international passengers connecting domestic flights are offered complimentary domestic flights valid at SGN and HAN (except routes to Dien Bien and Con Dao). International routes that can be applied free add-on domestic policy include MEL/SYD/FRA/LHR/NRT/TPE/ICN to HAN/SGN.
Bamboo Airways is operating an expansive domestic network to 21 of 22 airports in Vietnam while serving 12 international routes to Asia (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia), Europe (Germany, UK), Australia (Melbourne, Sydney), and other continents soon.
The airline changed management in early August, and the new administration team will concentrate on expanding the fleet and destinations and ensure that the reputation for top-class service and professionalism is enhanced.
