3.2 million passengers travelled through Copenhagen Airport in October, four per cent more than last year. Airlines have now launched their winter traffic programmes, offering several new routes from Copenhagen.
October is one of the busiest travel months at Copenhagen Airport, with many Danish and southern Swedish passengers heading abroad for their autumn holidays. A total of 3.2 million passengers travelled through the terminals. Many Danes travel during week 42, when schools are closed for the autumn half-term, while Swedish schools have their autumn break, known as höstlov, in week 44.
“We can clearly see the impact of the autumn holidays at the airport, and October was the sixth consecutive month with more than three million passengers. There are more destinations than ever on our route map, giving travellers plenty of opportunities to explore the world while also making it easy for international visitors to travel to Denmark,” says Peter Krogsgaard, Chief Commercial Officer at Copenhagen Airport.
Danish travellers account for 34 per cent of all passengers at the airport, while Swedish travellers account for 14 per cent.
Waiting times at security
Following several days of long waiting times, the situation at security has improved and waiting times are now shorter.
“We have brought in additional staff, but we are of course very sorry about the long waiting times and the poor experience they have caused for some of our passengers,” says Peter Krogsgaard.
The longer waiting times are due to the Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority asking Copenhagen Airport to introduce additional measures in the security screening process, which have increased processing times.
Spain tops Europe, New York leads in the US
In October, around 280,000 passengers travelled between Copenhagen and one of 13 destinations in Spain. This makes Spain the most popular country for travellers, with passenger numbers up six per cent compared with last year. Malaga, Barcelona and Mallorca top the list of Spanish destinations.
On long-haul routes, the US is the clear favourite. In October, 127,000 passengers travelled between Copenhagen and one of 10 destinations in the US. New York is by far the most popular, followed by San Francisco and Boston. One in three passengers travelling between Copenhagen and the US flies to or from New York.
New destinations in the winter programme
On Sunday 25 October, airlines launched their winter traffic programmes, with 232 direct routes from Copenhagen giving travellers even more choice.
Among this winter’s additions are several new long-haul routes. SAS has launched a direct service to Mumbai and will open routes to Krabi and Phuket in Thailand in December. Air Greenland has started flying direct to Ilulissat, while the winter programme also includes new connections to destinations including Liverpool, Newcastle and Baghdad.
“We are heading into the winter season with a strong traffic programme and new routes that give travellers from Copenhagen even more choice. With around 135 destinations on the route map this winter, Copenhagen Airport is strengthening its position as the leading international hub in the Nordic region,” says Peter Krogsgaard.
The airlines’ winter traffic programme runs until 28 March 2027.
