Aldabra giant tortoise Goliath is celebrating a major milestone, turning 50 years old after spending almost 30 years at Australia Zoo.
Born in 1976, Goliath has been part of the Australia Zoo family since 1997 and has become a much-loved family member, known by generations of keepers who have cared for him throughout his time at the Zoo.
Australia Zoo Reptile Keeper Katelyn Dunsmuir said Goliath’s long history at the Zoo has made his 50th birthday particularly special.
“Goliath is still relatively young at 50, with Aldabra giant tortoises capable of living up to 200 years. To celebrate his birthday, we prepared a cake with his favourite foods, including watermelon, rockmelon and berries, decorated with carrot love hearts and topped with green beans for candles. He enjoyed his special birthday treat alongside his friend, Jarvis,” said Katelyn.
“Goliath loves spending time with his keepers, especially when he gets a good scratch across his shell. Aldabra giant tortoises are incredibly intelligent, so it’s always special to slow down and spend quality time with Goliath,” she said.
“Aldabra giant tortoises are classed as a vulnerable species, so Goliath plays an important role as an ambassador for his wild counterparts. Having him here at Australia Zoo gives people the chance to connect with these wonderful animals and learn more about why protecting them matters.”
Aldabra giant tortoises (Aldabrachelys gigantea) are native to the Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles. They are among the largest tortoises in the world, with adults capable of weighing more than 200 kilograms and growing to over one metre in length. Their long necks allow them to reach vegetation above ground level, while their powerful legs and large, domed shells help them thrive in the challenging conditions of their island home.
Wildlife conservationist Bindi Irwin said, “Goliath is a wonderful ambassador for Aldabra giant tortoises, and turning 50 is such a special milestone. It’s beautiful to see the connection people have with him and the love he inspires for his species.”
For the Australia Zoo team, Goliath’s birthday is a celebration of one of our most beloved residents and the special place he holds after almost three decades at the Zoo.
