Some careers are carefully planned. Others take unexpected turns, with each chapter shaping the person who eventually arrives at where they are meant to be.

For Jean-Pierre Joncas, the journey from studying psychology, to working as a firefighter, and eventually finding his place in hospitality has been anything but conventional. Today, that journey has reached a significant milestone as he is named Stelliers Asia 2026 General Manager – Hotelier of the Year, recognizing his leadership at Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort.

The award was presented at the Stelliers Asia 2026 Grand Awards in Bangkok, celebrating hoteliers whose leadership, passion and contribution continue to shape the hospitality industry across Asia.

For Jean-Pierre, however, the recognition is not simply about an individual achievement. It is about the people who have shared the journey with him.

“Leadership is never a solo journey,” says Jean-Pierre. “Every achievement is built on the people around you, the team who shows up every day, cares about what they do, challenges you, and continues to move forward together. This recognition belongs to them as much as it belongs to me.”

Since joining Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort, Jean-Pierre has brought more than two decades of hospitality experience across 15 hotels in nine countries, with a career spanning internationally recognized brands including Park Hyatt, Fairmont, Raffles, and Sofitel.

Yet his impact at the resort has extended beyond his professional experience. One of the most important principles he has brought to his leadership is a conscious move away from authority-driven management and towards trust, empowerment and genuine human connection.

It is a philosophy shaped by personal reflection. Jean-Pierre openly speaks about unlearning the belief that fear creates strong leadership.

“Fear may create compliance, but trust brings out the best in people” he explains.

That belief has shaped the culture he continues to build at Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua, one where people are encouraged to contribute ideas, take ownership, develop their strengths and understand that high performance and wellbeing can exist side by side.

His approach also extends beyond the hotel. Jean-Pierre has championed initiatives that strengthen the resort’s connection with Bali and its wider community, bringing local culture into the guest experience while creating opportunities for meaningful social impact.

In 2025, the resort’s charity gala in support of Bali Life Foundation raised IDR 500 million, supporting the construction of a school in Sumba. The school’s groundbreaking followed in 2026, turning an evening of hospitality into something with a lasting impact far beyond the resort.

Perhaps fittingly, Jean-Pierre’s unconventional career has always brought him back to the same thing: people.

Psychology sparked his curiosity about human behaviour. His years as a firefighter taught him about teamwork, responsibility and staying composed when circumstances are unpredictable. Hospitality eventually brought those experiences together in an industry built around caring for others.

“Hotels may have beautiful buildings, technology and extraordinary facilities,” he says, “but at the end of the day, it is people who create the experiences guests remember.”

For the team at Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort, his Stelliers recognition is therefore more than an individual accolade. It reflects a leadership journey that has been shared by many and a culture that continues to evolve with trust, accountability, empowerment and care at its heart.

After more than 20 years in hospitality, Jean-Pierre remains as curious about the future as he was when he first entered the industry.

“Hospitality is a people business,” he says. “If we want to build a stronger future for our industry, we have to invest in people and make them feel that hospitality is a profession where they can grow, contribute and make a difference.”

At Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort, Jean-Pierre continues to lead with that belief, building not just a successful hotel, but a culture where people can grow and make a difference.
