A long-haul connection through Abu Dhabi is becoming much harder to dismiss as merely an airport pause.
Etihad Airways and the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi have released new figures. More than 310,000 international travellers have used the Abu Dhabi Stopover programme since its launch in 2024. The scheme is now expanding beyond the capital to Al Ain.
For eligible Etihad passengers, the idea is simple. Connect through Zayed International Airport and turn the journey into a small holiday. Guests can choose a complimentary one- or two-night hotel stay in Abu Dhabi or Al Ain.
That may sound like a generous travel perk. It is also smart tourism policy.
Etihad says Europe is the programme’s biggest source region. The United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain lead that market. The Americas follow, led by the United States and Canada. India is also among the strongest source markets.
About 60,000 travellers used the programme in the first eight months of 2026, according to Etihad.
For Abu Dhabi, every passenger persuaded to leave the terminal can become a hotel guest. They may also dine out and visit attractions. Some may even return for a longer holiday. DCT Abu Dhabi and Etihad say that is already happening.
In other words, the free room is not just a kind gesture after a long flight. It is destination marketing with a pillow.
Al Ain gives the stopover a greener detour
Adding Al Ain changes the shape of the offer. Travellers now have a second stopover destination with a very different feel.
Abu Dhabi city brings beaches, museums, theme parks and major entertainment. Al Ain offers palms, forts, mountains and a slower pace.
The Arab Ministerial Council for Tourism named the Garden City Capital of Arab Tourism for 2026. The council confirmed the title during its 28th session in Baghdad in December 2025.
Al Ain is also closely linked with the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He was the founding president of the United Arab Emirates.
The region contains the Cultural Sites of Al Ain UNESCO World Heritage property. Its visitor drawcards are varied. They include Al Ain Zoo, Jebel Hafeet, Al Ain Oasis, Al Jahili Fort and Qasr Al Muwaiji.
That makes it more than an overflow option for Abu Dhabi city. It is a separate experience in its own right.
For travellers who have seen the UAE’s bright city lights before, that may be part of the appeal. A night among palm groves and old forts is quite a change from another airport lounge.
Free hotels and a shuttle to Al Ain
Etihad has a dedicated Al Ain stopover offer. Eligible guests can receive up to two nights of complimentary accommodation.
Free Etihad Shuttle transfers also operate between Zayed International Airport and Al Ain city centre.
Short-stay travellers should note one important detail. The shuttle does not drop guests off directly at their hotel. Etihad says the airport-to-Al Ain transfer takes about two and a half hours and runs twice daily.
That journey time is worth noting.
Anyone planning to conquer Al Ain in one sweep may need to edit the itinerary. The mountain, forts and oasis deserve some breathing room.
Etihad promotes several hotels in the programme. They include Four Points by Sheraton Al Ain, Radisson Blu Hotel & Resort Al Ain and Al Ain Rotana.
More than a free bed
The offer now includes more than hotel accommodation.
Etihad stopover guests can use the digital Abu Dhabi Stopover Pass. It offers savings of up to 15% on selected attractions and experiences.
Etihad lists several major attractions under the pass. They include Qasr Al Watan, The National Aquarium and Ferrari World Yas Island.
There is also a practical extra.
Etihad and DCT Abu Dhabi introduced complimentary medical travel insurance in 2026 through The National Insurance Company Daman.
Eligible international visitors on qualifying Etihad-operated flights receive automatic cover for up to 15 days. The offer applies to travel to or through Abu Dhabi between 1 July and 31 December 2026, subject to policy terms and exclusions.
For a traveller breaking up two long sectors, that is useful. It is one less piece of paperwork to think about.
A useful sales tool with one booking caveat
For the travel trade, the stopover has clear sales value.
It can break up a long itinerary. It can also add more value to an Etihad booking. The client does not need to build another holiday from scratch.
However, advisers should check one booking detail carefully.
Etihad’s 17 September 2026 announcement says guests booking through etihad.com “or via select travel agents” can add the stopover.
Yet the airline’s current online FAQ says something different. It says flights booked through a travel agent are not eligible for the free or paid stopover hotel programme.
Those two statements do not sit neatly together.
Until Etihad aligns the wording, travel advisers should check eligibility first. They should also confirm the booking channel before promising free accommodation.
A complimentary hotel room is a fine surprise. Discovering at check-in that it was never included makes for a very different holiday memory.
Saleh Mohamed Al Geziry is Director General for Tourism at DCT Abu Dhabi. He said the programme showed what close cooperation between tourism and aviation could achieve.
He said more than 310,000 visitors had already extended their journey in Abu Dhabi. He said Al Ain would widen that appeal. It would invite visitors to discover more of the emirate’s heritage, natural beauty and local experiences.
Etihad Airways chief executive Antonoaldo Neves summed up the commercial aim in similarly clear terms. The airline wants connecting passengers to have a reason to stay. It also wants them to have a reason to return.
That is the clever part of the programme.
Abu Dhabi is not only competing for people whose final destination is the UAE. It is also competing for the attention of travellers who are already passing through its airport.
With more than 310,000 stopover visitors recorded since 2024, the concept has gained scale. Al Ain now gives Etihad and Abu Dhabi a second story to sell.
One stopover offers the pace, culture and entertainment of a major capital. The other offers oases, mountains and heritage.
For a traveller facing another long flight, two free hotel nights may be persuasive. Add a new destination and the terminal exit starts to look tempting.
