Basketball Victoria has launched Together We Raise the Game, a campaign bringing together the programs, partnerships and practical resources supporting safer, healthier, more inclusive and positive basketball environments across the state.
Built around the principles Ask. Learn. Improve, the campaign has been created to make support easier to find, understand and use for the associations, clubs, coaches, officials, volunteers and families who help deliver basketball in Victorian communities.
It also highlights the broader role basketball plays in building confidence and resilience, supporting physical and mental wellbeing, developing leaders and creating a sense of connection and belonging.
Basketball Victoria CEO Nick Honey said the campaign recognised that some of basketball’s most important outcomes could not be measured on a scoreboard.
“The scoreboard captures the result of a game, but it cannot measure the confidence a child develops, the sense of belonging a family finds or the lifelong impact of a great coach, official or volunteer,” Honey said.
“These are some of basketball’s biggest wins, and they are why creating positive environments across our sport matters so much.”
Every time a family brings a child to training, a game or a club activity, it places trust in the people and organisations delivering basketball.
Positive experiences do not happen automatically. They require ongoing work across child safeguarding, mental health and wellbeing, inclusion, coach development and volunteer support, together with strong partnerships across the sport and wider community.
“Creating environments where children and young people are cared for and supported must be the foundation of everything we do,” Honey said.
“That responsibility is shared across the basketball community. Basketball Victoria wants to make it easier for the people delivering the game to access practical tools, trusted information and partnerships that can support them in that work.”
Together We Raise the Game provides a central platform for Basketball Victoria’s existing and emerging initiatives, while sharing stories that demonstrate how basketball is contributing to the health, wellbeing and development of Victorians.
The campaign is intended to be an ongoing commitment rather than a one-off awareness initiative. It recognises that no club, association, organisation or sport has every answer—and that stronger outcomes are achieved through listening, sharing knowledge and continually improving.
“Basketball Victoria’s role extends well beyond facilitating competitions,” Honey said.
“Our purpose is to connect communities through basketball and support the health, wellbeing and development of all Victorians. Delivering on that purpose means listening to our community, learning alongside them and helping turn that learning into meaningful action.”
The campaign brings together Basketball Victoria’s work with member associations and clubs, schools, volunteers, coaches, officials, governments, community organisations and industry partners.
It encourages everyone involved in basketball to ask questions, be curious, explore the support available, share what they learn and identify ways to strengthen the experience for others.
“Success in basketball has always been a team effort,” Honey said.
“When we are willing to ask more, learn more and keep improving together, we create a stronger game and stronger communities. Together, we raise the game.”
